Fastest lap: Francesco Bagnaia completed it in 1 minute and 28.508 seconds (2024).
Quickest lap in the race: Francesco Bagnaia with a time of 1 minute and 29.840 seconds (2023)
Jorge Martin secured the pole position for the 2024 Austrian MotoGP by setting a new lap record at the Red Bull Ring, surpassing Francesco Bagnaia.
As the final session commenced, practice leader Bagnaia, aiming for his third consecutive victory at the Red Bull Ring, held the provisional pole position.
Despite dealing with pain from a cut on his left thumb, which he seemingly got while exiting the shower the previous night, Martin sped to a time of 1 minute 27.789 seconds, securing the pole position.
This afternoon, Bagnaia begins the Sprint only three points shy of the championship leader Martin.
Marc Marquez managed to secure third place, overcoming an unexpected challenge from Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro, though he was still half a second slower than Martin. Jack Miller and Maverick Vinales filled out the second row.
Miller and Pol Espargaro advanced to Qualifying 2 by topping Q1, while Miguel Oliveira, despite matching Espargaro's lap time, and Pedro Acosta just missed the cut and will begin the race in 13th and 14th positions.
Espargaro, appearing to have the speed for a front-row start, ended up crashing at turn 3 during his last attempt in Qualifying 2, and expressed his frustration by tapping his head on the ground.
This weekend will feature special appearances from test riders Pol Espargaro for KTM, Lorenzo Savadori for Aprilia, and Stefan Bradl for Honda.
Due to the high stress on tires at the Sachsenring track, Michelin is introducing a stronger rear tire design for the Red Bull Ring.
Fabio di Giannantonio suffered a dislocated left shoulder in an accident that occurred on Friday, leading to a decision that he will be unable to participate for the rest of the weekend.
