Volvo’s Electric Vision: Sleek Aerodynamics Without Sacrificing Classic Design

Volvo's design approach for electric vehicles will remain consistent with their traditional combustion engine models, as stated by Florian Mockenhaupt, the brand's senior exterior design manager, during a conversation with Australian publication Drive.

Mockenhaupt emphasized that despite efforts to enhance electric vehicle range by lowering aerodynamic resistance, the visual identity of Volvo must be maintained. He pointed out that unlike the approach taken by Mercedes-Benz EQS with its simulated grille and decorative hood emblem to align with the brand's other models, Volvo would not adopt unconventional designs.

Critics argue that models which prioritize aerodynamics above everything else tend to resemble a bar of soap that has melted, characterized by curved rooftops and seamless design features.

Mockenhaupt stated that understanding the customer's preference for roomy interiors, Volvo ensures models like the XC90 and EX90 avoid an overly low roofline to meet those standards. This philosophy is evident in the EX90's 3-row SUV, which showcases a redesign that keeps the classic SUV silhouette. Moreover, these design elements are also present in the more compact Volvo EX30, although its launch in the U.S. has been postponed because of recent import duties.

Volvo has revised its electrification goal, stating that by the year 2030, its entire range will not be fully electric as previously anticipated.
