Sharp’s LDK+ Electric Van: The High-Tech Mobile Lounge That Powers Your Home
A cutting-edge electric van from Sharp reverses into the driveway, converting into a relaxation area.
Sharp, a Japanese company recognized for its TVs and sound systems, has introduced an all-electric prototype van. The focus of the Sharp electric van is, as one might expect, on the interior ambiance.
At Sharp's recent Tech-Day '24 event in Tokyo, the company introduced the LDK+, an electric van designed with a concept that emphasizes its use as a stationary space, offering an interior akin to a "extended living room," as per a press statement from Sharp.
The design is a modernized version of the traditional camper van or personalized van constructions. Instead of outdated shag carpeting, the design features rear seats that can turn around to face a screen installed on the inside of the back door. The windows are fitted with a liquid-crystal substance, enabling the opacity to be altered for seclusion purposes.
Innovative LDK+ Electric Van Design Concept
Sharp proposes that the LDK+ might function as an additional space for a home. Positioned in the driveway, it has the potential to be utilized as a cinema space, a play zone for kids, or an office, all while keeping in touch with other household members as though they were just next door.
This emphasis on the internal experience of the car brings to mind the Afeela brand, a collaborative effort by Sony and Honda, which centers around a Japanese tech firm that hasn't previously been directly involved in car manufacturing.
Sharp proposes that the LDK+ may have the capability to function as a backup power supply for homes through bidirectional charging. Surplus energy generated by residential solar panels might be kept within the van's battery, allowing for utilization during emergencies or to reduce total carbon emissions.
Sharp is currently a provider of technology components for modern cars and electric vehicles, notably the screen displays for the Fisker Ocean. Since being acquired by the Hon Hai Technology Group, commonly referred to as Foxconn, in 2016, Sharp has been under the umbrella of a company with its own aspirations in the automobile industry.
In 2020, Foxconn unveiled a public platform specifically for electric vehicles, and presented an electric delivery vehicle, which could potentially be connected to the Sharp LDK+ idea. Foxconn has been involved in several electric vehicle initiatives and acquired a previous General Motors factory in Ohio, which once manufactured the unsuccessful Lordstown Endurance electric truck in the United States.
