Rolls-Royce Accelerates into the Electric Future with SUV and Sedan Plans, Outpacing Bentley
Rolls-Royce intensifies its focus on electric vehicles, with plans for an SUV and a sedan
Rolls-Royce is set to bypass competitor Bentley by transitioning directly into the era of fully electric vehicles.
According to Automotive News, the car manufacturer has plans to introduce two electric vehicles, specifically a crossover and a sedan. This might also coincide with the potential launch of an electric Rolls-Royce convertible.
In 2023, Rolls-Royce debuted their initial foray into the electric vehicle market with the introduction of the Spectre, epitomizing the brand's distinctive take on opulent electric luxury.
According to the report, following the introduction of the Spectre coupe, Rolls-Royce plans to add an electric SUV to its range. This forthcoming electric SUV is anticipated to be a full-size vehicle, yet it will be more compact than the current V-12 Cullinan model, as per Automotive News. The launch of this electric SUV is expected to take place at the beginning of 2027.
After the release of the electric SUV around the end of 2028, Rolls-Royce plans to introduce its third electric vehicle, which will take the form of a sedan. This new electric model is set to succeed the current top-of-the-line Phantom, as reported by Automotive News. With the Phantom being a classic name within the Rolls-Royce lineup, it remains to be seen whether the new electric sedan will carry on with the same moniker.
The Spectre is set to take over as the successor to the Phantom coupe for the time being. Rolls-Royce was compelled to issue a recall for the Spectre EV because of a defective electrical grounding, which heightened the risk of fire.
Similar to its industry peers, Rolls-Royce has pledged to transition to a fully electric lineup by 2030. However, it stands out from the rest by strictly adhering to this promise. Even with more than half of its cars equipped with V-12 engines in the early months of 2024, the luxury car manufacturer plans to phase out all gasoline-powered models by the conclusion of 2031.
Bentley, a key rival of Rolls-Royce, once appeared on track to transition to electric vehicles ahead of its competitor. In 2020, the company announced plans to offer a full range of plug-in hybrids by 2026 and switch to all-electric models by 2030. However, in March, Bentley pushed back the introduction of its inaugural electric vehicle to 2026, with the first deliveries expected in 2027, attributing the delay to shifts in the market environment.
