Red Bull Tightens Reins on Perez Amidst Constructors’ Championship Struggle: Horner Demands Performance Parity
Tension increases for Sergio Perez as Red Bull emphasizes the need for a close competition between its drivers. “It’s crucial for us to ensure our drivers are closely matched, as having a large disparity is something we can't afford.”
Christian Horner, the head of Red Bull's Formula 1 team, has increased the expectations on Sergio Perez as the last six races of the 2024 season approach. He emphasized that the team "cannot afford" to experience a significant difference in performance between its drivers.
It appears that Red Bull is set to be overtaken by McLaren for the F1 constructors' championship title.
Although there is a 41-point gap between the two teams, considering their current performance trends, it seems improbable that McLaren will lose their position at the top of the leaderboard.
Red Bull's decline in performance since the summer break has played a big role in their struggles, but Perez's ongoing underperformance is a major contributor to their probable loss of the constructors' championship.
In 2025, Red Bull will need to think about Ferrari's formidable lineup, featuring Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
McLaren is set to keep Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri on their team, whereas Mercedes has paired George Russell with Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
The question of who will partner with Max Verstappen next year remains unanswered, despite Perez having a contract that extends until 2025.
Reports suggest that Red Bull is assessing Liam Lawson over the course of the upcoming six races to determine if he has the qualifications to join their team for the next season.
Helmut Marko has expressed his desire to pair Verstappen with a younger driver.
In an interview with Motorsport.com, Horner expressed urgency regarding Red Bull's driver selection for the upcoming year, stating, "We are in dire need of solutions."
"When considering our competitors, Ferrari is expected to be formidable in the coming year, especially with Hamilton and Leclerc on their team. Additionally, McLaren presents a powerful duo with Norris and Piastri."
"It's crucial that we ensure our two drivers are closely matched in performance since having a significant disparity is unacceptable."
Before the summer break, there were uncertainties surrounding Perez's future, as Red Bull was contemplating switching him out for Daniel Ricciardo.
Nonetheless, Red Bull believed they hadn't adequately supported their existing driver.
