New York City Supercharges EV Future with 5,000 New Chargers in Parking Sites Alliance
New York City to see an increase in electric vehicle chargers with the installation of 5,000 units across various parking locations, thanks to a partnership between a parking service provider and a company specializing in charging systems.
The Hudson Valley Parking Trust, following its purchase of Icon Parking, the biggest parking space provider in New York City, has partnered with Invisible Urban Charging (IUC) to set up charging stations across its parking locations, as was collectively announced by the entities a few weeks ago.
In 2022, IUC announced its intentions to increase Florida's EV charging stations twofold. The initiative placed emphasis on the installation of high-amp Level 2 AC charging stations. Continuing with this trajectory, the company has set a goal to roll out 1 million charging stations within the upcoming five years.

Introducing more charging stations is set to meet the rising demand for electric vehicles in New York City, which experienced a staggering 660% rise in electric vehicle registrations in the last five years. The city's goal is to swap out 400,000 conventional vehicles for electric ones as part of its strategy to achieve a carbon-neutral status by the year 2030
New York City took proactive steps towards setting up charging facilities by implementing a regulation in 2013, mandating that a fifth of the parking spaces in new developments be equipped for charging. However, this requirement does not extend to already-built parking facilities or to curbside parking situations. According to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), there are about one million cars parked along the streets of New York City, and the city is currently developing a program to provide charging options for these street-parked vehicles.

New York City may have faced its fair share of logistical challenges, but it's also been the breeding ground for cutting-edge charging technology, including Gravity's featured charging hub, which is touted as the quickest in the nation.
Research from MIT released the previous year suggests that focusing more on charging during the day and at work locations could alleviate the necessity for more power stations—by mitigating the high demand for power in the evenings. This ties in with a well-established claim that, although DC rapid-charging is excellent for extended journeys, the wider-scale introduction of intelligent charging holds greater significance.
