Jorge Martin increased his lead in the MotoGP championship by winning the Australian Grand Prix sprint race, leaving Marc Marquez behind in second place, and Francesco Bagnaia finishing in a far-off fourth.
After dominating the competition to secure the top spot in Saturday's qualifying, Martin transformed that achievement into his first sprint win since the San Marino Grand Prix.

Martin dominated the race from start to finish, maintaining a lead that at one point exceeded three seconds. The Pramac team member eventually reduced his pace towards the end but still managed to cross the finish line 1.520 seconds ahead of Marc Marquez.
Marquez managed to bounce back after veering off course at the first turn during the initial lap, falling to eighth place, to then aggressively make his way up to second. Meanwhile, Enea Bastianini caused disappointment for his team-mate Bagnaia from the official Ducati team by overtaking him for third place during the eighth lap out of 13.
Bagnaia's fourth-place finish has widened his gap in the championship standings to Martin from 10 points to 16, just before the 27-lap Grand Prix on Sunday.
Bagnaia found some relief in fourth place when the aggressive pursuit by Maverick Vinales and Marco Bezzecchi behind him led to a frightening collision at the first turn during the 12th lap.
Vinales surged ahead of Bezzecchi as they approached Turn 1, but the VR46 competitor was unable to slow his Ducati in time and collided with the rear of the Aprilia.
Bezzecchi was assisted off the track using a stretcher, yet he quickly managed to mount a scooter for a ride back to the paddock. The incident is currently being looked into.
At the beginning of the 13-lap race, Martin maintained his lead position from the start, whereas Marquez dropped to eighth place from second, having veered off course into the first turn.
As the first lap concluded, Martin had established a 0.8-second lead over his competitors, a gap that he would continue to widen throughout the race, demonstrating the Pramac rider's dominance.
Despite facing the possibility of a long lap penalty due to receiving a warning for exceeding track limits on the third lap, he persevered.
As the fourth lap began, Bagnaia had advanced to second place from his fifth-place starting position on the grid, yet he was unable to close the gap on Martin's lead.
From the rear, Marquez was making a strong comeback from eighth place, with the eight-time world champion advancing into the top three positions by the sixth lap, surpassing Bezzecchi.
Marquez swiftly positioned himself behind Bagnaia and secured the second place from his soon-to-be team-mate during the eighth lap at Turn 4, as Bastianini advanced into third position at Turn 10.
Immediately, the world champion fell behind, as Martin surged ahead, maintaining a lead of 3.1 seconds at the beginning of the ninth lap.
Marquez managed to narrow the gap with Martin, yet the Pramac competitor maintained his speed in the last few laps to clinch his sixth sprint victory of 2024.
Bagnaia finished 2.511 seconds after his teammate Bastianini, securing fourth place, while Fabio Di Giannantonio from VR46 took fifth. Nonetheless, he is currently being examined for a possible violation related to tire pressure.
Franco Morbidelli secured the sixth position riding a Pramac Ducati, just before Raul Fernandez of Trackhouse Aprilia, with Aleix Espargaro from the official Aprilia team and Augusto Fernandez from Tech3 GASGAS rounding out the top nine to claim the last point.
Fernandez secured his initial sprint points since the Spain event in a chaotic race marked by numerous crashes, which resulted in the rest of the KTM team going down, along with Gresini's Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco of LCR Honda also experiencing falls.
