Liberty’s Ownership Era: Navigating the Calendar Clashes Between MotoGP and F1
Under Liberty Media's ownership, MotoGP and F1 schedules will continue to overlap
"Currently, both F1 and MotoGP are considering each other's timetables during their planning phases"
Carmelo Ezpeleta, the CEO of Dorna Sports, anticipates a tighter collaboration between MotoGP and Formula 1 in scheduling events now that both are under the stewardship of Liberty Media, although some scheduling conflicts will persist.
At the beginning of this year, Liberty, the proprietor of F1, revealed it had acquired a significant 86% stake in Dorna and MotoGP through a transaction valued at $4.2 billion. This deal is anticipated to be finalized by the end of 2024.
Liberty, holding unique visions for MotoGP's expansion, has consistently reassured that it does not intend to remove the series' distinctive character, despite concerns among enthusiasts that it might become similar to F1.
The schedules for both championships have been unveiled for 2025, with Formula 1 planning 24 races and MotoGP tentatively scheduled for 22 events.
In April, Formula 1 announced its schedule for 2025, and MotoGP disclosed its calendar just last month. Despite the timing, there are nine weekends throughout the year where the two racing series will overlap.
In a conversation with the Spanish media outlet AS, Ezpeleta acknowledges the challenge of preventing scheduling conflicts due to the large number of races hosted by both series, a situation that is not expected to see any immediate changes under Liberty's stewardship.
"He mentioned that avoiding scheduling conflicts is challenging since F1 has 24 races and MotoGP has 22, all occurring from March through November."
"The collaboration has always been strong, and it's expected to enhance with Liberty Media's acquisition of Dorna. However, we'll still face challenges in coordinating schedules."
"F1 and MotoGP are now considering each other's timetables during their planning phase."
"We check their schedule before planning our own, and now they review ours before setting theirs. This mutual consideration wasn't a common practice previously."
MotoGP is scheduled for a comeback in Hungary by 2025, taking place at the newly established Balaton Park circuit, currently slated for improvements to meet required standards.
The series plans to make a comeback in Argentina after this year's race was called off because of budget cuts that resulted in a lack of funding for the event.
