Kia EV Owners to Gain Access to Tesla Superchargers: Adapters and Rollout Details Revealed
Kia announced on Wednesday that starting January 15, their electric vehicles will be able to use Tesla's Superchargers, with adapters for the North American Charging Standard (NACS) expected to be available in early 2025.
Starting from September 4, 2024, individuals purchasing the 2024 or 2025 models of Kia EV9, or the 2024 model of Kia EV6, will be gifted a complimentary NACS adapter. However, this offer does not extend to those who have previously taken ownership of the Kia EV6 and EV9 before the specified date, or to any owner of the Kia Niro EV, all of whom will be required to purchase the adapter at a cost that has not yet been revealed.

Numerous leading automobile manufacturers have proclaimed their intention to integrate the NACS charging interface, though merely a few have executed strategies to provide converters and access to Supercharger stations. Among them, solely General Motors insists that every buyer purchases a converter. Conversely, Kia is exhibiting more frugality compared to Ford, which initially provided a complimentary converter with each electric vehicle to their current clientele.
Kia intends to start distributing adapters at the start of 2025 and aims to grant access to Supercharger stations from January 15, 2025. Notably, Kia avoided directly referencing Tesla or Superchargers, merely stating that users will have the capability to utilize "over 16,500 NACS DC rapid charging stations across the U.S." This figure reflects the total number of NACS connections as reported by the Energy Department's Alternative Fuel Data Center (AFDC) as of September 2024.

Unlike most car manufacturers, who promptly referenced Tesla in their statements, Stellantis stood out as the sole outlier. Kia, a collaborator in the Ionna North American rapid charging consortium, has declared allegiance to both the NACS and CCS formats. It seems Kia may want to highlight the concept of NACS plugs that operate outside Tesla's Supercharger system, in expectation of Ionna's expansion.
Kia, alongside its affiliated companies Hyundai and Genesis, has declared their backing for the NACS standard. Hyundai has initiated the production of its electric vehicle, the Ioniq 5, which includes the Tesla NACS charging ports. Meanwhile, Kia has yet to specify when it will incorporate NACS ports into its car lineup.
