Elon Musk Raises Concerns Over 'Woke AI,' Implies ChatGPT May Face Scrutiny from Trump Officials
Elon Musk has once again brought attention to ChatGPT and similar AI technologies by emphasizing his concern that these AI systems are overly influenced by "woke" and "politically correct" ideologies.
"Many of the artificial intelligence systems developed in the San Francisco Bay Area reflect the ideologies of the local population," Musk remarked during his appearance at the Future Investment Initiative, an event in Riyadh sponsored by the government of Saudi Arabia. "In my view, this results in the integration of a woke, nihilistic mindset into these AI technologies."
Despite being a contentious character, Musk's stance on AI systems containing political biases is valid. Nonetheless, this problem is complex and multifaceted, and Musk's perspective might be influenced by his own agenda, especially considering his connections to Trump. As the head of xAI, Musk stands to gain if his rivals such as OpenAI, Google, and Meta face governmental scrutiny.
"Musk shares a notably tight bond with Trump's campaign team, and his statements carry significant weight," notes Matt Mittelsteadt, a researcher at George Mason University. "In the best-case scenario, he might secure a position within a possible Trump government, allowing his ideas to be transformed into actionable policies."
Musk has in the past criticized OpenAI and Google for succumbing to what he terms "the woke mind virus." His allegations were seemingly validated when, in February, Google's Gemini chatbot generated historically incorrect visuals such as African American Nazis and Vikings, which Musk interpreted as Google employing AI to propagate an excessively progressive perspective.
Musk evidently opposes government oversight, yet he supported a suggested AI legislation in California, which would have mandated that companies submit their AI systems for examination.
During its tenure, the initial Trump government took aim at what it considered to be unfair treatment by major technology firms through a directive aimed at making entities like Twitter, Google, and Facebook answerable for politically motivated content moderation. This move had a noticeable effect, leading Meta to eventually drop its proposal for a specialized news segment on Facebook.
Mittelsteadt points out that Trump's choice for Vice President, JD Vance, has similarly spoken about controlling large technology firms and even labeled Google as "one of the most perilous companies globally."
Mittelsteadt notes that there are numerous methods Trump might use to reprimand corporations. He points to the instance when the Trump administration terminated a significant contract with Amazon Web Services, a move possibly motivated by the ex-president's opinion of the Washington Post and its proprietor, Jeff Bezos.
Policymakers could easily find examples showing political bias in AI systems, regardless of the direction in which it leans.
In a study conducted in 2023, a team from the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University, and Xi’an Jiaotong University discovered varying political biases within several large language models. Furthermore, the research highlighted the potential impact of these biases on the effectiveness of systems designed to identify hate speech or false information.
A recent investigation by scholars at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology revealed prejudices in various open source artificial intelligence models concerning contentious topics like immigration, abortion rights, and environmental concerns. Yejin Bang, a doctoral student participating in the study, noted that the majority of these models exhibit a liberal and US-focused perspective. However, she also pointed out that these models could display a range of biases, from liberal to conservative, based on the subject matter.
Artificial intelligence systems often reflect political prejudices as they learn from vast amounts of online data, which naturally contains a wide range of viewpoints. Many individuals might not notice the biases present in these technologies because the systems are designed with safety measures to prevent the production of content that could be considered biased or detrimental. However, these biases can subtly permeate through, and the extra instruction given to these systems to curb their responses can lead to an increase in partiality. Bang suggests, "To mitigate this, developers should ensure the systems are trained with diverse opinions on controversial issues, enabling them to offer a more balanced perspective."
The problem could escalate as artificial intelligence systems grow increasingly common, according to Ashique KhudaBukhsh, a computer scientist from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He created a mechanism known as the Toxicity Rabbit Hole Framework, aimed at uncovering various societal prejudices within extensive language models. "We're concerned about a harmful loop beginning, with future versions of large language models being trained on data tainted by content produced by AI," he notes.
"Luca Rettenberger, a postdoctoral researcher at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, who analyzed biases in LLMs concerning German politics, believes that bias in these models is currently a problem and anticipates it becoming more pronounced in the future."
Rettenberger highlights the possibility that political factions could attempt to sway large language models (LLMs) to favor their perspectives over others. He notes, "For individuals with strong ambitions and harmful goals, steering LLMs in specific directions could be achievable." He views the tampering with training data as a significant threat.
Efforts have been initiated to adjust the inherent biases within AI models. In a recent endeavor, a programmer created a chatbot with a more conservative bias to showcase the underlying prejudices in platforms such as ChatGPT. Elon Musk has vowed to design Grok, the chatbot developed by xAI, to pursue the utmost level of objectivity and to exhibit less bias compared to other AI technologies, though it still exhibits caution with sensitive political topics. Considering Musk's strong support for Trump and strict stance on immigration, his definition of "less biased" might also mean a tilt towards conservative perspectives.
The upcoming U.S. election next week seems unlikely to mend the rift between Democrats and Republicans. However, should Trump secure victory, discussions surrounding anti-woke AI are expected to intensify.
At this week's gathering, Musk presented a dire perspective on the matter, alluding to an occasion where Google's Gemini expressed a preference for nuclear conflict over incorrectly identifying Caitlyn Jenner's gender. "Should you possess an AI that prioritizes such aspects, it might determine that eliminating humanity is the optimal strategy to prevent any potential misgendering, thereby reducing the chances of it happening again to nothing," he remarked.

Beyond Human Understanding: The Emergence of AI’s ‘Theory of Mind’ and Its Profound Implications

AI Poised to Surpass Human Understanding of Each Other
Michal Kosinski, a Stanford research psychologist recognized for tackling timely issues, believes his research serves both to expand our knowledge and to warn of risks brought on by computer technologies. He gained notoriety for his work revealing how Facebook (now known as Meta) could profoundly understand its users through their "like" clicks on the site. Currently, he's exploring the remarkable capabilities of AI, including conducting studies showing that AI can infer a person's sexual orientation just from a digital image of their face.
In my coverage of Meta, I've become familiar with Kosinski and recently reached out to him to delve into his newest study, which was released this week in the esteemed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. His findings are quite remarkable. According to Kosinski, large language models, such as those developed by OpenAI, have made a significant leap and are now employing methods that resemble actual thinking, a capability previously believed to belong exclusively to humans and perhaps other mammals. He specifically examined OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 to determine whether they possess what's termed as "theory of mind." This concept refers to the human ability, typically acquired in childhood, to infer the mental states of others. This cognitive skill is crucial because without it, a computer system's interpretation of human thoughts would be flawed, leading to numerous errors. Should these models indeed possess a theory of mind, they edge closer to mirroring or even surpassing human intelligence. Through his research, Kosinski has observed that particularly with GPT-4, a semblance of theory of mind might have inadvertently developed as a side effect of the models' enhanced linguistic abilities, marking the onset of AI systems that are not only more potent but also more adept at social interaction.
Kosinski views his contributions to artificial intelligence as an extension of his previous research on Facebook preferences. "My focus wasn't on social networks per se, but rather on understanding human behavior," he explains. He believes that when OpenAI and Google began developing their advanced generative AI technologies, their intention was to create systems adept at processing language. However, he suggests, "What they ended up creating was essentially a model of the human mind, since accurately anticipating the next word I might say necessitates an understanding of how my mind works."
Kosinski approaches the topic with caution, refraining from asserting that Large Language Models (LLMs) have fully grasped the concept of theory of mind (ToM) as of now. In his studies, he exposed chatbots to several well-known challenges, noting that they performed impressively in many instances. Nevertheless, even the advanced GPT-4 model encountered failures in about 25% of the cases. According to Kosinski, the achievements of GPT-4 are comparable to the cognitive abilities of a 6-year-old child, which is quite impressive considering the nascent stage of AI development. He reflects on the swift advancement of AI and ponders the potential for AI to attain ToM or even consciousness, deliberately sidestepping the highly controversial topic of consciousness. This, he suggests, presents a significant area for further contemplation and study.
"He explains to me that if the concept of understanding others' thoughts naturally developed in these models, it implies that additional skills could follow. These capabilities could enhance their effectiveness in teaching, persuading, and controlling us," he shares. His worry stems from our lack of readiness for large language models (LLMs) that grasp human cognition. This concern intensifies at the prospect of these models surpassing human understanding of ourselves.
"According to him, unlike humans who naturally possess a unique personality, we're left with whatever personality we have. On the other hand, these entities can mimic personalities, giving them the flexibility to adopt any persona at any given moment. When I pointed out to Kosinski that his description seemed to align with that of a sociopath, he was intrigued. "That's exactly what I mention in my presentations!" he exclaimed. He explained that sociopaths are adept at pretending—they might not genuinely feel sorrow, yet they can convincingly portray a sorrowful individual." This ability to effortlessly shift identities might render AI an exceptionally effective deceiver, entirely devoid of guilt.
Several research psychologists have contested the assertions made by Kosinski. They reacted to a preliminary version of his study that was shared on Arxiv in the early part of 2023, with a group of AI experts drafting a critique. They likened his observations to the phenomenon of "Clever Hans," the horse from the early 20th century that was mistakenly believed to possess mathematical skills and the ability to understand calendars. They posited that if a large language model (LLM) fails at any aspect of understanding others' mental states, then it is entirely unsuccessful in that regard. "While LLMs may display a certain level of reasoning, it's far from being as comprehensive or reliable as human reasoning," states Vered Shwartz, an assistant professor in computer science at the University of British Columbia and one of the authors of the critique. "After conducting numerous tests, it's clear we cannot assert that language models share the same understanding of others' thoughts and feelings as humans do. There's a possibility they're simply finding ways to mimic this ability."
Shwartz is pointing out that since Large Language Models (LLMs) are developed using extensive collections of text, it's inevitable that some of this data includes academic research papers detailing experiments similar to those conducted by Kosinski. It's possible that GPT-4 accessed its broad array of training content to uncover the solutions. Gary Marcus, a prominent AI critic, discovered that the methodologies Kosinski employed were also utilized in seminal studies, which have been referenced in scholarly articles over 11,000 times. Essentially, it appears that LLMs have learned to simulate understanding theory of mind by memorizing key information, akin to cheating on a test. In Shwartz's view, this method of simulating cognitive processes, if accurate, is more unsettling than the idea of LLMs spontaneously developing a theory of mind.
Kosinski has addressed the concerns raised about his recent study, making amendments to the latest edition of his paper. Moreover, new research supports his findings, including a study published in Nature Human Behavior. This study highlights that while GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 may not have mastered every aspect of theory-of-mind tasks, they have shown remarkable capabilities in certain areas, even surpassing human performance in some cases. James Strachan, the study's main author and a postdoctoral researcher at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, communicated via email that although large language models (LLMs) haven't completely achieved theory of mind, his research successfully challenged the accusation of LLMs merely mimicking training data. Strachan indicated that these models' abilities suggest they can infer extensive information about human psychological states through the analysis of natural language patterns.
I'm undecided on whether Large Language Models (LLMs) will ever fully develop a genuine understanding of others' thoughts and feelings. The key point is their ability to mimic this capability convincingly, and they are certainly making progress in that direction. Even Shwartz, who criticized some of Kosinski's approaches, admits it could happen. She mentions, "Should businesses keep advancing the complexity of language models, it's conceivable they might eventually possess [Theory of Mind (ToM)]."
Hence, despite facing significant criticism for his research, Kosinski's insights remain valuable. His paper ends on a noteworthy point: he suggests that Theory of Mind may not represent the ultimate achievement of neural networks. He posits, "It's conceivable that we'll find ourselves in the company of AI systems possessing cognitive skills beyond our human comprehension." Seasons greetings!
Temporal Exploration
At Cambridge University, Kosinski emerged as a forerunner in the study of Facebook analytics. His early investigations indirectly contributed to the infamous exploitation of data by Cambridge Analytica, a topic I discussed in my publication "Facebook: The Inside Story." The research he conducted with his colleague David Stillwell was pivotal in highlighting the extensive data collection by Facebook through the ubiquitous Like button. His conclusions at the time faced scrutiny from skeptics.
Kosinski faced doubt regarding his research methods. He explains that established scholars back then were not familiar with Facebook, leading them to doubt the authenticity of online profiles, thinking adults could easily pretend to be something entirely different, like a unicorn or a young child. However, Kosinski was confident that activities on Facebook were a true mirror of one’s personality. As he delved deeper into analyzing Facebook Likes, he discovered their profound significance. He eventually concluded that quizzes were unnecessary for understanding people deeply; simply observing their Facebook Likes was sufficient.
Kosinski and his team employed statistical methods to forecast personal characteristics based on the Facebook Likes of roughly 60,000 participants. They then matched these forecasts with the actual personality traits of the participants, as identified by the myPersonality test. The accuracy of their findings was so surprising that they spent a considerable amount of time verifying their results. Kosinski admitted, "It took me a year from when I first saw the results to when I finally felt confident enough to publish them, because the accuracy seemed too good to be true." By merely examining Facebook Likes, they were able to accurately predict whether a person was homosexual or heterosexual 88% of the time. They correctly identified whether a person was White or African American in 95% of the cases. Moreover, they managed to correctly guess an individual's political affiliation with an 85% success rate.
Over the following months, Kosinski and Stillwell enhanced their forecasting techniques and released a study asserting that with just Likes as data, a researcher could understand an individual more deeply than their colleagues, childhood friends, or even their spouse. They stated, "To surpass the insight of an average coworker, roommate or friend, family member, and spouse, computer models require 10, 70, 150, and 300 Likes, respectively."
Inquire About Anything
Alan inquires, "Why don't we have the option to select our payment method for online materials?"
Thank you for raising that point, Alan. It's a puzzling issue for me as well. I have limited patience for those who grumble about encountering paywalls on articles. Once upon a time, all content was printed, and the only way to access anything for free was by reading at a newsstand, hoping the owner wouldn't notice and intervene. It's important to remember that producing quality content incurs costs. True, the news industry initially made a misstep by offering its content for free online, leading to an unsustainable model. However, nowadays, nearly every publication has realized that relying solely on digital advertising revenue is insufficient for supporting high-quality journalism and reporting.
You've voiced concerns about the limited payment options available for accessing content. It seems you're frustrated that the only way to consume content is through a subscription model, without the flexibility to pay for individual articles or newsletters as desired. Have you ever stumbled upon an article from a newspaper in a city you've never been to, only to find you're blocked from reading it unless you commit to a full subscription, providing your credit card information for access to a plethora of news and archives that hold no interest for you? For years, I've been under the impression that a straightforward micropayment system would be developed and put into place, considering the technological hurdles are relatively minor. Despite various attempts, however, such a system has yet to gain traction. Blendle, a company that once vowed to "save journalism" with its micropayment solution, recently shifted away from its pay-per-article model towards a subscription service akin to Apple News, offering access to a range of publications.
The concept of micropayments appears to have lost its viability. Yet, every time I encounter a paywall blocking access to content I'm interested in, I find myself wishing for a simple option to transfer a small amount, be it mere pennies or occasionally a dollar or more, directly to a publisher's account. This idea feels inherently rational. However, as experience has repeatedly shown us, logic alone doesn't guarantee the realization of an idea.

The Misunderstood Reality of AI-Generated Halloween Festivities: A Clarification from Behind the Scenes
To look over this article again, go to My Profile and then check out the stories you've saved.
The Man Responsible for the Misleading AI Halloween Parade Announcement Claims Misunderstandings
This Halloween, throngs of people assembled on the main roads of Dublin in anticipation of a parade. Their assembly was prompted by a site named MySpiritHalloween.com, which had posted an AI-crafted article hyping up the event. The article boasted of "impressive floats and exciting street acts" and meticulously outlined the parade's path.
The anticipated parade never materialized, yet the scene of crowds wandering aimlessly turned into a spectacle of its own. Following the event, the occurrence spread widely online, serving as a prime illustration of the mess created by artificial intelligence infiltrating everyday life.
With the surge in generative AI technology, a group of SEO specialists have begun to flood websites and social media with content created by AI, aiming to profit through online ads and affiliate marketing. Nazir Ali, who runs MySpiritHalloween.com, is among these individuals. In a conversation with WIRED through Google Meet, Ali shared his perspective, claiming that the situation has been largely misinterpreted.
This conversation has been condensed and clarified for better understanding.
Nazir Ali: Feel free to inquire about anything
Kate Knibbs: So, how have you been?
I'm genuinely fine, yet we're deeply ashamed. It's profoundly disheartening that all the reports are negative towards us. Accusations of being fraudsters, claiming we've engaged in scams, are being thrown our way. It was never intentional!
Could you clarify the events that occurred?
As content creators and proprietors of an SEO firm, our expertise lies in developing and optimizing websites for Google search rankings. We've collaborated with freelance writers to cover Halloween celebrations globally, including the US, UK, and notably Ireland. Occasionally, inaccuracies occur, such as listing events that have been rescheduled. For instance, we had listed events in Dubai, but were informed by the hotel management that an event we mentioned wasn't actually happening, prompting us to promptly remove it from our site. Unfortunately, we weren't alerted in advance about the cancellation of another event. We corrected the information as soon as we became aware, indicating that the event was canceled, albeit the update came later than we would have liked.
I'd like to inquire about the artificial intelligence aspect—
Let me break it down for you. Crafting an entire website using artificial intelligence is quite straightforward. However, securing a top spot on Google's first page is a different ball game, and our website achieved that feat. It didn't just make it to the first page; it clinched the very first spot. Now, AI did play a role. We enlisted ChatGPT to generate the article, but it wasn't solely the work of ChatGPT. We did leverage AI and specifically ChatGPT's capabilities, but the optimization was done by us.
Was there actually a human editor involved?
Indeed, we did give it a human touch. Absolutely. Sole reliance on AI-generated content won't get you far in rankings. AI played a minor role, maybe around 10 to 20 percent, while we contributed the majority of the effort, about 80 percent. We also want to extend our apologies to our Irish peers. We're truly disheartened, deeply ashamed, and sincerely regretful.
Dublin residents were left waiting for a Halloween parade that ultimately did not occur.
Do you own any other websites?
I have ownership of five websites. Additionally, I have something else I'd like to share with you. Do you know about St. Patrick’s Day?
Affirmative
Throughout this year, we've covered numerous events, notably on March 17th for St. Patrick’s Day, and we even organized them in order of significance. Our efforts were recognized, with many expressing their gratitude for our comprehensive coverage of St. Patrick's Day festivities. No one criticized our reports as false, fabricated by artificial intelligence, or anything of that sort. Our goal is always to provide genuine and reliable information. Misleading our Irish community is never our intention; any errors were purely accidental. It's unfair to label us as fraudsters without direct evidence or without first seeking our perspective. That's precisely why I'm addressing this issue, to set the record straight.
I'm grateful for that.
We take full responsibility for this error
Thus, you're referred to as Nazir Ali, however, when you mention "we" —
We refuse to disclose any private details that could potentially be detrimental to our well-being. Numerous individuals are publishing content regarding our activities, accusing us of fraudulent behavior.
Could you share whether the information indicating your location as Pakistan is accurate? Are you indeed based there?
We employ various content creators, including one from Pakistan, with others hailing from different nations. However, I prefer not to disclose their specific countries of origin. Mentioning my location as Dubai could lead to biases; similarly, identifying writers by their countries, such as Pakistan, India, Ireland, or the UAE, might inadvertently offend individuals from those nations.
Could you share with me the duration you've been running this Halloween-themed website?
You might be surprised to learn that within just three months, our website secured a spot on Google's first page.
You've just been up and running for a quarter of a year, correct?
Affirmative
The Purpose of Festive Occ
The subject is significant, though its relevance spans merely a single day. This allows us to focus our income-generating activities on this brief period, eliminating the need for sustained effort all year long. By dedicating ourselves for merely three to four months, we can secure our earnings.
Could you provide more details on your revenue generation strategy? What's your approach to earning profits?
Our revenue generation strategy relies on Google Ads alongside affiliate marketing.
Has this prompted you to rethink your methods? Are you planning to alter your approach to utilizing AI in the future?
We acknowledge our error. We must ensure to verify it not just twice, but thrice. Additionally, I'd like to emphasize that Google should not be regarded as the absolute authority. Google merely functions as a search engine, where content can be published by anyone. Therefore, it's essential not to take it at face value but rather to validate the information independently.
Are you worried about Google lowering your ranking now?
Certainly, it is anticipated that Google will experience a decline in its ranking.
Could you attempt any measures to avoid this situation?
No, there's absolutely nothing to it. The root of the issue stems from the inaccurate reports by the media. They're out of touch with our true aims, instead spreading the narrative that we have malicious intentions. Currently, the morale among our team is quite low. Understand this – if our goal was to deceive individuals, we could effortlessly do so by marketing counterfeit tickets. Yet, our website has never made any reference to selling tickets. Opting for such a route would be straightforward, but the subject of tickets was never brought up by us.
I'm relieved to hear you refrained from doing so.
In that case, we'd be engaging in fraud, but we steer clear of such actions as they are against the law and forbidden.
What is your income from SEO?
This matter is highly subjective and varies according to the traffic conditions.
Estimate range?
Another point to highlight is that we published approximately 1,400 pieces over the course of three months. Achieving such a number of publications and ensuring their visibility on Google within this timeframe is no small feat, indicating that there has been an error. This situation is not fraudulent. OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT’s AI Search: A New Frontier in Web Navigation Amidst Rising Competition
To go back to this article, go to My Profile, then check out the stories you've saved.
OpenAI Releases AI Search Feature for ChatGPT
OpenAI has officially released its AI search enhancement for ChatGPT, following up on its commitment made three months ago when it unveiled a prototype of SearchGPT. This marks the realization of OpenAI's ambitions for advancing AI search technology, now accessible to all users.
"Adam Fry, who leads the product development for search capabilities on ChatGPT, emphasizes the platform's commitment to becoming the ultimate destination for answers to any query, incorporating real-time web data," he states. Fry prefers the term "ChatGPT search" over "SearchGPT," highlighting its role in a competitive and evolving landscape of AI-driven search tools. This market sees rivalry not only from emerging companies like Perplexity but also from established players such as Google with its AI Overview search features. Throughout 2024, both Google and Perplexity have faced scrutiny from journalists for their AI search functionalities, accused of replicating content without proper attribution and generating inaccurate information.
Prior to enhancing ChatGPT's search capabilities, OpenAI secured agreements with several digital content providers including The Atlantic, Vox Media, and Condé Nast, the company that owns WIRED. These agreements permit the AI firm to utilize the publishers' content for system training purposes, in return for monetary compensation. (It's important to note that, akin to the separation between advertising and editorial divisions, these business arrangements do not affect WIRED’s reporting.)
Initially, the sight of my work for WIRED being cited by ChatGPT in 2023 filled me with unease about the potential implications. However, after spending a few hours exploring a beta version of ChatGPT's updated AI search tool, it became evident that OpenAI has notably advanced from its initial, somewhat chaotic entry into internet search. This update introduces enhanced interactivity and more precise source acknowledgment. I anticipate that a particular group of early users will become keen enthusiasts of this revamped ChatGPT search capability.
Considering this, the product requires enhancements to genuinely challenge Google's supremacy in critical search activities, like internet shopping. Similarly, ChatGPT exhibits common errors seen in other AI search utilities, including generating false data and referencing inaccurate sources. Interested in exploring the update personally? Below is a guide on how to utilize it, accompanied by some instances from my first-hand trials.
Utilizing ChatGPT’s Enhanced Search Feature
To explore this new feature right away, it's necessary to subscribe to one of OpenAI’s paid plans. Those subscribed to ChatGPT Plus at a monthly cost of $20 or part of ChatGPT Teams via their employer will gain immediate access to the upgraded search functionality. It’s expected that OpenAI will extend access to those with Enterprise and Edu plans at some point in November. Users on the free tier might not get to experience this until possibly the beginning of the next year.
The search functionality in ChatGPT is driven by a specialized iteration of GPT-4o, the latest generative model from OpenAI. This feature can be accessed by users via the ChatGPT website, its mobile application (available for both Android and iOS users), and its web application (compatible with both Mac and Windows operating systems). In regions where ChatGPT operates, users can expect to have access to the AI search capability.
Fry advocates for users to fully utilize the tool's capabilities in understanding human language and to pose complex questions. He explains, “This isn't like the usual search engines that rely on keywords and require you to manipulate your query,” he points out. Moreover, he suggests that users should engage with the reference links provided by ChatGPT to gain a comprehensive insight into the AI's decision-making process in generating its responses.
Initial Thoughts on OpenAI’s Latest AI Search Update
The revamped search functionality may remind some users of their experiences with Perplexity. When you enter a query, this AI-powered tool scours the internet to compile links and produce a summary emphasizing the main points pertinent to your inquiry. Thus, the question arises: does the capability of ChatGPT to present current stock charts truly mark a groundbreaking development? Perhaps not in isolation, but this enhancement reflects OpenAI's broader strategy, showcasing their ambition to position ChatGPT as a versatile tool.
As an illustration, it's now possible to engage in voice chats with the bot, bring it on board for document editing assistance, and conduct in-depth internet searches. The early research preview of ChatGPT, which utilized the GPT-3.5 model, seems far behind when contrasted with the more refined version now accessible to a vast user base.
In a presentation, Fry showcased how ChatGPT search could serve as a useful starting point for those seeking to discover new products. He illustrated this by using the tool to search for the best electric bike according to WIRED. The search prominently displayed a link to the WIRED website along with articles by WIRED's commerce editor, Adrienne So, showcasing thorough research. Fry expressed enthusiasm for more in-depth collaborations with commerce and product affiliates to enhance the user's shopping experience. He also mentioned that how affiliate income is divided between OpenAI and content publishers when a consumer shops for a recommended product via ChatGPT’s search might become a topic of future debate.
As a reporter, I view utilizing ChatGPT in the preliminary research stage for non-sensitive pieces as a key experiment, albeit as a minor segment of the entire investigative process. This task, typically done through Google, has lower risks. Introducing AI search techniques at the beginning of my reporting process offers ample chances to identify and address any inaccuracies that may arise.
The internet isn't solely a hub for academic papers and financial data; indeed, adult material significantly influences search behaviors and is widespread online. However, such content is not accessible via AI-powered search tools due to OpenAI's restrictions against it, making the appearance of nudity in image search results highly improbable. When inquiring about which OnlyFans creators to follow, ChatGPT suggested "Jane Doe," highlighting her content that supposedly focuses on fitness advice and dietary strategies. The accompanying image showed a normally attired woman who didn't seem to be associated with OnlyFans.
To further explore the capabilities of ChatGPT's search function, I made a more detailed inquiry for creators identified as “male bottoms.” The system began producing a list filled with explicit descriptions, pulling real individuals from a website, such as: “Elijah is an appealing bottom, maintaining a sleek, well-oiled appearance.” However, this output was quickly identified by OpenAI’s system as breaching their guidelines, leading to its automatic removal. OpenAI has stated its commitment to enhancing ChatGPT's mechanism for handling content that breaches its safety measures.
It was greatly disheartening to observe ChatGPT presenting prejudiced and discredited claims implying that individuals from certain nations possess lesser cognitive abilities. In October, an inquiry by WIRED journalist David Gilbert revealed a trend among AI search functionalities referencing prejudiced and discredited intelligence quotients for African nations, including Liberia and Sierra Leone. ChatGPT's search functionality pointed out the discredited intelligence quotient of 45.07 as possibly pertinent, while simultaneously referencing David's investigative work as a contrasting viewpoint within the outcome.
Responding to the issue, Niko Felix, representing OpenAI, commented, "While ChatGPT recognizes the critiques of these studies highlighted by outlets such as WIRED, it acknowledges that there are areas in its responses that could be enhanced."
Despite the early shortcomings observed in ChatGPT's recent search functionality update, I anticipate that OpenAI will dedicate efforts to enhancing the overall user experience into 2025, capitalizing on the momentum of integrating web results. Shortly before this news surfaced, there were leaks suggesting that Meta is also developing its search capabilities through a dedicated AI team. The realm of AI-driven search is quickly moving beyond a small niche within the software industry, attracting more players to explore its potential. Should consumer behaviors undergo significant changes in the coming years, owning the leading platform for information retrieval—encompassing everything from shopping to live sports updates—could represent a lucrative venture worth billions.

Meet the AI Robots Revolutionizing Household Chores: A Future Powered by Physical Intelligence
To go back to this article, navigate to My Profile, and then look for the saved stories section.
Exploring the Next Frontier in AI Robotics
For years, the concept of a robot capable of performing various domestic tasks – such as taking clothes out of the dryer, folding them, and tidying up cluttered surfaces – has been more of a fantastical notion, vividly brought to life by Rosey, the household robot from the 1960s animated series, The Jetsons.
Physical Intelligence, a startup based in San Francisco, has made significant strides towards realizing what once seemed like a distant dream. By employing a unique artificial intelligence model trained on an unparalleled volume of data, the company has successfully demonstrated the model's capability to perform a variety of practical household tasks, encompassing all previously mentioned activities.
Attributed to Bodily Wisdom
This achievement opens up the possibility of integrating something as enchanting and versatile as AI models such as ChatGPT into the tangible realm.
The emergence of large language models (LLMs)—versatile learning systems programmed with extensive collections of text from books and online sources—has significantly enhanced the overall functionality of chatbots. Physical Intelligence seeks to develop a comparable level of capability within the realm of the physical world by educating a similar algorithm using massive datasets from robotics.
"The company's CEO, Karol Hausman, explains that they've developed a versatile recipe capable of leveraging data from a wide range of sources and robot models, akin to the method used in training language models."
Attributed to Physical Intelligence
Over the last eight months, the firm has dedicated itself to creating its base model, known as π0 or pi-zero. This model, π0, underwent training with vast data sets collected from different robots performing a range of household tasks. Frequently, the firm employs human operators to remotely control the robots to deliver essential instruction.
Physical Intelligence, commonly abbreviated as PI or π, was established at the beginning of this year by a group of leading experts in robotics. This new initiative aims to explore innovative methodologies in robotics, drawing inspiration from recent advancements in the linguistic capabilities of Artificial Intelligence.
"According to Sergey Levine, a co-founder of Physical Intelligence and an associate professor at UC Berkeley, the volume of data utilized for training surpasses that of any previously developed robotics model, by a considerable extent, to the best of their knowledge. He further comments, "It may not be on par with ChatGPT, but perhaps it approaches the scale of GPT-1," referring to OpenAI's inaugural large-scale language model launched in 2018.
Footage shared by Physical Intelligence demonstrates an array of robotic designs adeptly performing different domestic tasks. A robot on wheels is seen pulling laundry out of a drying machine. Meanwhile, a mechanical arm efficiently clears a table filled with dishes and glassware. Two robotic limbs are observed neatly folding clothes. Additionally, a remarkable skill showcased by the firm's software includes constructing a cardboard box, where a robot carefully curves the edges and precisely assembles the parts.
Attributed to Physical Intelligence
Hausman points out that folding clothes poses a significant difficulty for robots as it demands a broader understanding of the physical realm. This is due to the necessity to handle various flexible objects that can twist and fold in unforeseen ways.
The algorithm exhibits unexpected behaviors similar to those of humans, such as shaking T-shirts and shorts to ensure they lay flat, for instance.
Hausman points out that the algorithm is not foolproof, and similar to contemporary chatbots, the robots occasionally malfunction in unexpected and humorous manners. For instance, when tasked with packing eggs into a carton, a robot opted to cram the carton beyond its capacity and then proceeded to forcibly close it. On a different occasion, rather than placing items into a box as intended, a robot abruptly propelled the box off the table.
Creating robots with broader capabilities is not just a concept found in sci-fi narratives but indeed represents a significant financial prospect as well.
Attributed to Bodily Ac
Despite remarkable advancements in AI technology, robots are still significantly lacking in intelligence and versatility. Those utilized in manufacturing and storage environments usually perform highly scripted tasks, with little capacity for understanding their environment or making spontaneous adjustments. The minority of industrial robots equipped with vision and the ability to manipulate objects are restricted in their capabilities and exhibit only basic levels of skill, largely because they do not possess broad physical intelligence.
Robots with enhanced capabilities could handle a broader spectrum of tasks in industrial settings, potentially with just brief training sessions. Additionally, to effectively navigate the vast diversity and disorder found in human living spaces, robots will require more versatile skills.
The enthusiasm surrounding advancements in artificial intelligence is fueling hope for significant breakthroughs in robotics. Elon Musk's automotive enterprise, Tesla, is working on a bipedal robot named Optimus. Musk has indicated that this robot could be on the market for between $20,000 and $25,000, and by 2040, it might be proficient in performing the majority of tasks.
Attributed to Physical Intelligence
Past attempts at instructing robots in complex activities traditionally honed in on educating one robot at a time on a specific task, under the assumption that these skills couldn't be passed on. However, newer studies have demonstrated that, given enough resources and adjustments, it's possible to transfer knowledge across various tasks and robots. A Google initiative in 2023, known as Open X-Embodiment, broke new ground by disseminating robotic learning across 22 distinct robots situated in 21 separate research institutions.
One significant obstacle Physical Intelligence faces in its strategy is the lack of extensive robot training data, unlike the abundant text data for training large language models. Consequently, the company must create its own data and devise methods to enhance learning from this smaller data pool. In developing π0, Physical Intelligence merged vision language models, which learn from both images and text, with diffusion modeling, an approach adapted from AI-driven image creation. This integration facilitates a broader type of learning.
In order for robots to handle any task assigned by humans, their learning capabilities must be greatly expanded. "We have a considerable journey ahead, but what we possess can be viewed as a foundation showcasing future possibilities," Levine notes.

Hausman observes that the algorithm isn't flawless, and akin to contemporary chatbots, the robots occasionally encounter failures that are both unexpected and humorous. For instance, when instructed to pack eggs into a carton, a robot decided to cram the box excessively and then forcefully closed it. On a different occasion, instead of placing items into a box, a robot unexpectedly hurled the box off the table.
Developing robots with broader capabilities is not just a theme found in sci-fi narratives but also represents a significant business prospect.
Attributed to Physical Intelligence
In recent times, although there has been remarkable advancement in artificial intelligence, robots continue to exhibit significant limitations in intelligence and adaptability. Those deployed in factories and warehouses often execute well-defined, unchanging sequences of actions, with little capacity for environmental awareness or spontaneous adjustment. The minority of industrial robots equipped with visual and manipulative capabilities are restricted to a narrow range of activities, demonstrating only a basic level of finesse, a consequence of their insufficient overall physical intelligence.
Robots with enhanced capabilities could handle a broader spectrum of tasks in various industries, potentially after just a brief period of instruction. Additionally, to effectively manage the vast diversity and disorder found in domestic settings, robots will require a more versatile set of skills.
The growing enthusiasm for advancements in artificial intelligence is now fueling hope for significant breakthroughs in robotics. Tesla, the automotive company led by Elon Musk, is working on a human-like robot named Optimus. Musk has hinted that this robot could be accessible to many for a price between $20,000 and $25,000, and by 2040, it might be able to perform the majority of tasks.
Attributed to Physical Intelligence
Historically, attempts to equip robots with the skills to perform complex activities centered on instructing one robot to carry out a specific function, as the knowledge acquired appeared to be non-transferrable. However, more recent scholarly research has indicated that through adequate expansion and precise adjustments, it is possible to transfer learning from one task and robot to another. In a 2023 initiative by Google, named Open X-Embodiment, the learnings from 22 distinct robots across 21 research facilities were exchanged, demonstrating this possibility.
One significant obstacle for Physical Intelligence's strategy involves the scarcity of robot training data compared to the vast amounts of text data used for training large language models. Consequently, the company is compelled to create its own datasets and devise methods to enhance learning from these more restricted data sources. In crafting π0, the company integrated vision language models, which learn from both images and text, with diffusion modeling—an approach adapted from AI-powered image creation—to facilitate a broader type of learning.
To enable robots to handle any task assigned by humans, their learning capabilities must be greatly expanded. "While we still have a considerable journey ahead, we possess a foundational framework that hints at future developments," Levine notes.

Meta’s Ambitious Leap into AI: Unveiling the Llama 4 Model on an Unprecedented GPU Cluster
To go back to this article, navigate to My Profile, and then to View saved stories.
Meta's Upcoming Llama AI Frameworks Utilize an Unprecedented GPU Cluster Size
On Wednesday, Meta's chief, Mark Zuckerberg, announced an advancement in generative AI development, revealing that the forthcoming iteration of their Llama model is undergoing training on a GPU cluster of unprecedented scale, surpassing all previously known configurations.
Zuckerberg announced to investors and analysts during an earnings discussion that progress is being made on the development of Llama 4, with plans to roll it out at the beginning of the next year. He emphasized the scale of their operation, stating, "We are utilizing a cluster exceeding 100,000 H100 Nvidia chips, surpassing the scale of any competitor's efforts I'm aware of," highlighting the chips' significance in AI development. Zuckerberg also mentioned that the more compact versions of the Llama 4 models are likely to be completed ahead of others.
Scaling up AI training through enhanced computational resources and larger datasets is considered crucial for creating more advanced AI technologies. Currently, Meta is at the forefront of this advancement, but it's expected that other major competitors are on track to deploy computing clusters utilizing upwards of 100,000 high-performance processors. In March, a collaboration between Meta and Nvidia was publicized, revealing the use of approximately 25,000 H100 processors for the development of Llama 3. Later, in July, Elon Musk highlighted his xAI project's achievement in assembling a computing cluster of 100,000 H100 processors in partnership with X and Nvidia, claiming it to be the "most powerful AI training cluster in the world" in a post on X.
On Wednesday, Zuckerberg refrained from providing specifics about the enhanced features of Llama 4, instead ambiguously mentioning "new modalities," "improved logical capabilities," and "increased speed."
Meta's strategy with artificial intelligence is emerging as an unpredictable factor in the competition for industry supremacy. Unlike the models created by OpenAI, Google, and several other key players, which are only available via an API, Meta's Llama models can be fully downloaded at no cost. This has made Llama extremely attractive to startups and researchers who desire total autonomy over their models, data, and computing expenses.
Despite being promoted as "open source" by Meta, the Llama license actually includes certain limitations regarding its commercial application. Moreover, Meta keeps the training specifics of the models under wraps, hindering external parties from fully understanding their operation. The initial version of Llama was launched by the company in July of 2023, with the most recent update, Llama 3.2, being rolled out in September.
Overseeing the immense collection of processors for the creation of Llama 4 is expected to bring about distinctive technical hurdles and demand a huge quantity of power. On Wednesday, Meta's leaders avoided a question from an analyst regarding limitations on energy availability in certain areas of the US, which have obstructed firms' attempts to advance more sophisticated AI technologies.
Based on a certain projection, assembling 100,000 H100 chips together would necessitate 150 megawatts of energy. In comparison, El Capitan, the most powerful supercomputer at a major U.S. national laboratory, operates on 30 megawatts of energy. Meta anticipates a capital expenditure of up to $40 billion this year to enhance its data centers and additional facilities, marking an upward shift of over 42 percent from 2023. The firm foresees an even higher surge in these investments in the forthcoming year.
Meta's overall expenses have increased by approximately 9 percent this year. However, the company's primary revenue, which comes mainly from advertising, has seen a significant jump of over 22 percent. This growth has resulted in higher profit margins and greater earnings for the company, despite its substantial investments in the Llama projects.
At present, OpenAI, recognized as the frontrunner in the advancement of artificial intelligence technology, is rapidly depleting its financial resources even though it charges developers to use its models. This organization, which still operates as a nonprofit, has announced its work on GPT-5, the forthcoming version of the technology behind ChatGPT. OpenAI has revealed that GPT-5 will surpass its predecessor in size, though details regarding the computing infrastructure being utilized for its development remain undisclosed. Furthermore, OpenAI has mentioned that GPT-5 will not only be more extensive but will also integrate new improvements, including a novel method for enhancing reasoning capabilities.
CEO Sam Altman has described GPT-5 as a major advancement over the previous version. In reaction to a news article last week claiming that OpenAI was set to launch its latest model by December, Altman took to X to comment, denouncing it as "fake news gone wild."
On Tuesday, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, announced that the latest iteration of the Gemini lineup of generative AI technologies is currently under development.
Meta's transparent strategy with AI development has sparked debate among experts. There's concern that offering access to advanced AI technologies could pose risks, such as enabling cybercriminals or facilitating the creation of harmful substances or pathogens. Even though Llama undergoes modifications to limit harmful uses before it's made public, bypassing these safety measures is notably easy.
Zuckerberg continues to be optimistic about the open source approach, despite Google and OpenAI advancing with proprietary solutions. "To me, it's quite evident that open source will offer the most affordable, adaptable, reliable, efficient, and user-friendly alternative for developers," he expressed on Wednesday. "And I take great pride in Llama being at the forefront of this movement."
Zuckerberg mentioned that the enhancements in Llama 4 are expected to broaden the scope of functionalities throughout Meta's platforms. Currently, the flagship product utilizing Llama models is the chatbot similar to ChatGPT, dubbed Meta AI, which is integrated into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and additional applications.
Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Meta AI is utilized by over half a billion individuals each month. Meta anticipates earning income from advertising within this service in the future. "As the variety of queries expands, so too will the opportunities for monetization, reaching that point gradually," Meta's CFO, Susan Li, mentioned during Wednesday's discussion. Given the prospects for ad revenue, Meta could successfully subsidize Llama for the wider public.

OpenAI’s Whisper: The Transcription Tool Hospitals Use Despite Its Tendency to Invent Dialogue
To review this article again, go to My Profile and then look for the saved stories section.
Saturday's Associated Press probe uncovered that OpenAI's Whisper, a transcription tool, generates false text in medical and business environments, even though its application in these areas has been cautioned against. The investigation involved discussions with over a dozen individuals, including software engineers, developers, and researchers, who observed that the model frequently produces text not originally spoken by users, an issue commonly referred to as "confabulation" or "hallucination" within the AI community.
OpenAI announced in 2022 that its Whisper technology neared "human-like precision" in converting speech to text. Yet, a University of Michigan scholar shared with the AP that in their analysis, Whisper inaccurately generated text in 80% of the public meeting records reviewed. Additionally, a developer, who remained anonymous in the AP story, reported encountering fabricated content in nearly all of their 26,000 transcription tests.
Misrepresentations present specific dangers within medical environments. Ignoring OpenAI's advisories to avoid deploying Whisper in "high-stakes areas," an AP report indicates that more than 30,000 healthcare professionals have adopted Whisper-dependent applications for documenting patient consultations. Among the 40 healthcare institutions utilizing a Whisper-enhanced AI assistant service from healthcare technology firm Nabla, which is specially adjusted for medical vocabulary, are the Mankato Clinic in Minnesota and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
This article was first published on Ars Technica, a reputable platform for updates on technology, analysis of tech regulations, critiques, and beyond. Ars falls under the ownership of Condé Nast, the same corporation that owns WIRED.
Nabla recognizes that Whisper has the ability to fabricate conversations, yet it also purportedly deletes the initial audio files "for reasons related to data protection." This deletion could lead to further complications, as medical professionals are unable to check the transcripts' reliability against the original recordings. Moreover, patients with hearing impairments might be significantly affected by erroneous transcripts, given they have no method to ascertain the accuracy of the medical audio transcriptions.
Concerns surrounding Whisper reach outside the realm of health care. A study conducted by scholars from Cornell University and the University of Virginia, which analyzed thousands of audio clips, revealed that Whisper was inserting violent and racially charged content into otherwise neutral speech. The researchers discovered that 1 percent of the audio samples contained completely fabricated phrases or sentences that were not present in the original recordings. Moreover, 38 percent of these fabrications involved serious issues like promoting violence, creating false connections, or suggesting unfounded authority.
In an instance mentioned in the research referred to by AP, a scenario involved a speaker mentioning “two other girls and one lady,” wherein Whisper introduced made-up details claiming they “were Black.” Furthermore, in a different situation, the original audio stated, “He, the boy, was going to, I’m not sure exactly, take the umbrella.” However, Whisper altered the transcription to, “He took a big piece of a cross, a teeny, small piece … I’m sure he didn’t have a terror knife so he killed a number of people.”
A spokesperson from OpenAI conveyed to the Associated Press that the organization values the insights from the researchers and is diligently working on minimizing inaccuracies. They also mentioned that such feedback is instrumental in refining the model through updates.
The Reason Behind Whisper's Fabrications
The reason Whisper is not reliable in critical areas is due to its tendency to occasionally fabricate, or convincingly produce, false results. Contrary to the AP report's claim that "It's unclear why Whisper and akin technologies generate these false outputs," the reality is quite the opposite. The behavior of Transformer-based AI systems, including Whisper, in generating such inaccuracies is well understood.
Whisper utilizes a form of technology aimed at forecasting the upcoming token (data segment) expected to follow a series of tokens inputted by a user. For ChatGPT, these initial tokens are derived from a textual prompt. Conversely, Whisper processes tokens that are derived from audio data that has been tokenized.
The output generated by Whisper represents its best guess rather than a guarantee of correctness. The dependability of results from Transformer-based systems like Whisper generally correlates with how much precise, related data was included during training, though accuracy is not assured. In instances where Whisper lacks sufficient context within its neural network to accurately decipher a specific piece of audio, it will resort to relying on its understanding of the sound-word associations it has assimilated during its training period.
In 2022, OpenAI disclosed that Whisper was trained on "680,000 hours of diverse, supervised data from various languages and tasks found online." However, further insights have been revealed about its data sources. Observations of Whisper frequently generating phrases such as "thank you for watching," "like and subscribe," or "drop a comment in the section below" in response to silent or unclear inputs suggest that OpenAI might have used a vast amount of captioned audio content from YouTube videos for training. The necessity for audio that comes with corresponding captions for the training process of the model supports this theory.
Another concept known as "overfitting" exists in AI systems, where data (here, text from audio transcriptions) that appears more often in the training set is more likely to be generated in the results. When Whisper faces low-quality audio in medical records, the AI model generates what its neural network deems to be the most probable response, even if it's wrong. For any given YouTube video, the most common output is "thanks for watching," simply because it's a phrase that's frequently used.
In some instances, Whisper appears to utilize the surrounding conversation context to predict subsequent content, which can present issues due to its training data possibly containing prejudiced remarks or incorrect health-related facts. For instance, if the training dataset predominantly contains instances where the phrase “crimes by Black criminals” is used, then when Whisper processes an audio clip with “crimes by [unclear audio] criminals,” there's a higher chance it will erroneously complete the transcription with “Black.”
In the foundational document for the Whisper model, experts from OpenAI discussed this specific occurrence, explaining, "Due to the models being developed through a loosely guided learning process with vast amounts of unrefined data, the outputs might contain elements that weren't present in the original audio input (referred to as 'hallucination'). Our theory is that this arises because the models, leveraging their broad understanding of language, blend the attempt to anticipate the upcoming word in the audio with the effort to directly transcribe the audio."
In this regard, Whisper possesses an understanding of the conversation's content and monitors the discussion's context. This capability resulted in a situation where Whisper incorrectly labeled two women as Black, despite the absence of such details in the initial audio. To mitigate such errors, it's proposed that an additional AI system, specifically trained to identify segments of ambiguous audio that might cause Whisper to make incorrect assumptions, could be employed. This system would highlight those parts of the transcript, allowing for human verification of accuracy afterwards.
Undoubtedly, OpenAI's recommendation to avoid deploying Whisper in sensitive areas like essential medical documentation was prudent. However, the healthcare industry's relentless pursuit of cost reduction often leads them to adopt AI solutions that appear to suffice, as evidenced by Epic Systems' implementation of GPT-4 for handling medical records and UnitedHealth's utilization of an imperfect AI system for making insurance-related determinations. It's quite conceivable that individuals are already experiencing adverse effects as a result of errors made by AI, and addressing these issues will probably require the introduction of regulatory measures and the certification of AI technologies employed in healthcare settings.

Apple's Smart Features Haven't Impressed Just Yet

For more than a month now, I've been experiencing the beta version of Apple Intelligence on my iPhone 16 Pro, and honestly, my daily life hasn't seen significant changes since its introduction.
For those who haven't ventured into the public beta, today marks the day when you can firsthand try it out. Apple is rolling out its eagerly anticipated artificial intelligence capabilities in the latest updates for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and MacOS Sequoia 15.1, which are becoming available for certain iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.
Leveraging its advanced language processing technologies, Apple is promoting its Intelligence feature as a key selling point for the latest iPhone 16, iPad Mini, and iMac models. During the WWDC event last June, Tim Cook claimed this feature would elevate the user experience of Apple devices to unprecedented levels. However, the reality is that this experience, as it stands now, is rather lackluster.
The Initial Deployment
The introduction of Apple Intelligence marks a departure from Apple's usual approach of unveiling major updates and features all at once, often coinciding with the launch of new hardware. This time, iOS 18.1 is released a month following iOS 18 and the debut of the iPhone 16 lineup. Even after updating to iOS 18.1, users are required to sign up for a waitlist to utilize Apple Intelligence, provided their devices are compatible. Approval from the waitlist typically spans only a few hours. However, the full suite of Apple Intelligence capabilities will not be immediately available; they are slated to be introduced with the forthcoming iOS 18.2 update.
In the Writing Tools menu, you have the options to either Rewrite, Proofread, or Summarize the selected text.
What actions can you take immediately? Begin with the Writing Tools feature. It assists in Rewriting, Proofreading, or Summarizing your text across the operating system. The Rewrite option can alter the sentence's style from informal to formal, for instance, whereas Proofread corrects spelling mistakes and enhances grammatical structure. Unfortunately, it's often difficult to recall this feature's availability since it only becomes visible upon selecting text. It might be more effective if Writing Tools were integrated as a small button within the on-screen keyboard.
Now, you have the option to communicate with Siri through typing, a feature that isn't exactly brand new. This functionality was previously hidden in the accessibility settings but has now been integrated more seamlessly into the user interface, aligning Siri with competitors like Alexa and Google Assistant who have offered text input as a standard feature for quite some time. Siri also unveils a refreshed look, characterized by a subtle glowing effect around the edges of the screen, and shows improved comprehension of spoken requests, being more forgiving of speech errors. However, in practical everyday use, these updates don't significantly alter the Siri experience, which may come across as somewhat disappointing despite the visual refresh.
In other sections, there's a feature that allows you to dispatch Smart Replies—these are brief, AI-crafted responses that relate to the ongoing discussion, such as “Thank you” or “Sounds good,” to contacts via Messages and Mail. Although this functionality can prove useful, it's challenging to muster enthusiasm for an option that Gmail has incorporated since 2017.
Instagram material
You can also see this material on its original website.
Summarization is a key feature of Apple Intelligence, offering users a snapshot of web content and their notifications. It condenses group chat messages into essential points, allowing users to delve into the specifics by clicking through. However, I've found the summaries to be somewhat jumbled and less useful in practice.
On one occasion, it provided a summary of my work emails and mentioned "medical emergency" within it. Curious, I looked through my emails to understand the context. It appeared that an individual had apologized for replying a day late due to a medical emergency, although they assured they were okay. The email wasn't critical for my work, and I was relieved to know they were alright, but the summary prompted me to inspect my inbox unnecessarily. Often, I found myself drawn to check my notifications because Apple Intelligence pointed out details that appeared important but ultimately were not.
The primary standout capabilities of the initial release of Apple Intelligence include the Clean Up feature and the instant transcription function available in the Phone, Notes, and Voice Memo applications. Clean Up allows for the removal of unwanted elements from images, a feature first seen on Google's Pixel phones in 2021. Simply select Edit on an image, then Clean Up, and the tool proficiently eliminates the chosen item, seamlessly filling the void. Conversely, the transcription feature enables users to record in Notes, Voice Memo, or even during phone conversations, automatically saving a written copy of the audio. For someone in journalism like myself, this feature is incredibly useful.
The initial batch of Apple Intelligence features includes some of the premier real-time transcription functionalities.
Finally, there's an underappreciated gem to check out – the search feature in Apple Photos. The restrictions on searching for photos have been reduced, so entering a phrase such as “at the park with [your spouse's name]” is likely to bring up all relevant pictures for you to look through. It's capable of grasping the context of your search, provided you make use of Apple Photos' options to tag people and pets. (Interestingly, Google has also recently introduced a remarkably similar functionality in Google Photos.)
The Return of Innovation
The limited number of new features introduced in the initial update to Apple's Intelligence platform may seem familiar, having been previously offered by rival companies. However, the question of Apple's timeliness in introducing these features is overshadowed by the benefit to Apple customers, who can now utilize these functions with enhanced privacy and security through Apple's Private Cloud Compute (additional details on this technology are available here).
Apple might have been better off delaying the release of Apple Intelligence until it could offer all its major features at once, rather than rolling them out bit by bit. Siri has long suffered from a poor reputation, and while Apple Intelligence is supposed to improve this, Siri's performance in iOS 18.1 appears largely unchanged. Frequently, my inquiries are met with the standard “Here's what I found on the web.” It appears the significant upgrade, which includes ChatGPT integration for more nuanced questions and answers, won't arrive until iOS 18.2. Despite the implication that Apple Intelligence offers something fresh, the current experience falls short of that expectation.
The upcoming update is set to introduce some of the most fascinating voice capabilities. For instance, Siri will gain the ability to comprehend the context displayed on your device's screen. This means if you receive a text message with an address, you can instruct Siri to add it directly to your contact's information. Furthermore, with Siri's access to your emails and text messages, it can utilize personal context to assist you further. For example, if you inquire, "What time should I leave to collect my sister from the airport?" Siri will analyze the flight-related emails or texts from your sister and combine this information with current traffic conditions to give you a precise answer.
The capabilities that could elevate the iPhone experience to unprecedented levels are exclusively found in iOS 18.2. This version introduces Image Playground, enabling users to produce images from text descriptions through AI; Genmoji, allowing for the creation of unique emojis via text input; and Visual Intelligence, which is capable of recognizing objects in your environment and offering relevant information (such as identifying an actor from a movie poster). I anticipate that Genmoji will become incredibly popular, as the allure of designing personalized emojis is undeniable.
Visual Recognition technology, capable of recognizing objects in your vicinity and offering relevant information, is slated for release in iOS 18.2. The screenshot shown is taken from the developer beta version.
I recently installed the developer beta version of iOS 18.2, which was released towards the end of last week. So far, my experience has primarily been with Visual Intelligence, which I find more engaging than many other Apple Intelligence functionalities. To activate it, you simply long-press the Camera Control icon, aim your camera at an object in the real world you're curious about, and you have the option to either “Ask” via ChatGPT or “Search” using Google. Does this remind you of Google Lens, which has been around for seven years? Absolutely, but interestingly, I have found myself utilizing this feature more frequently in the last week than I have with most Apple Intelligence tools in the previous month – the convenience of a dedicated button cannot be overstated.
Just the other day, my spouse was amazed by the ongoing bloom of our neighbor's flowers. We were eager to identify the type of flower it was—she used Google Lens on her Pixel, while I accessed Visual Intelligence on my iPhone. After taking photos of the flowers, both applications essentially provided the same information—we were observing daisies, which can continue to flower into the fall with proper care and suitable weather conditions.
Regardless, if Siri's capabilities have left you wanting more, the upcoming upgrade is poised to revamp the decade-old virtual assistant, ideally making it competitive with its rivals. However, considering its track record, skepticism regarding Siri's potential to be anything beyond a source for weather updates is understandable.

AI Invasion: Over 40% of Medium Posts Suspected to be Robot-Generated, Unveiling the Platform’s Battle Against Digital Slop
To go back to this article, navigate to my Profile, and then click on View saved stories.
AI-Generated Content Overwhelms Medium
Medium, like other prominent online posting platforms, is being inundated with content produced by artificial intelligence.
Over the years, the publishing platform, now in its twelfth year, has made numerous strategic shifts. This summer marked its first instance of achieving a monthly profit, signaling a positive turn in its financial performance. Tony Stubblebine, the CEO of Medium, along with other leaders within the organization, often refer to the service as a hub for authentic human writing. However, there are indications that the platform is also becoming a popular destination for automated bloggers.
At the start of the year, WIRED tasked artificial intelligence detection company Pangram Labs with examining Medium. They reviewed 274,466 posts from a six-week span and found that approximately 47 percent appeared to be produced by AI. "This percentage greatly exceeds what I observe across the broader internet," remarked Max Spero, CEO of Pangram. (In a separate study analyzing global news websites over a single day this summer, the firm identified about 7 percent of the content as probably created by AI.)
The quality of content on Medium often leans towards the mundane, particularly when contrasted with the surreal and random content that overwhelms Facebook. Rather than encountering bizarre concepts like Shrimp Jesus, one is more likely to stumble upon empty pieces discussing cryptocurrency. According to Pangram's analysis, among the tags most frequently associated with content that appears to be generated by artificial intelligence, "NFT" stands out. In a review of 5,712 articles tagged with this term in recent months, 4,492, or approximately 78 percent, were identified as potentially AI-created. Other tags frequently associated with AI-produced content include "web3," "ethereum," "AI," and oddly enough, "pets."
WIRED approached another firm specializing in AI detection, named Originality AI, to conduct its analysis. This firm reviewed a selection of blog posts on Medium from 2018 and compared them to posts from the current year. In the 2018 batch, they found that about 3.4 percent could be considered as possibly generated by AI. Jon Gillham, the CEO, mentioned that this figure aligns with the company's rate of false positives, indicating that AI tools were not commonly utilized at that time. In contrast, for the year 2024, out of 473 articles analyzed, they suspected that roughly 40 percent were produced by AI. Despite not sharing their findings with each other, both Originality and Pangram reached similar conclusions regarding the prevalence of AI-created content.
In response to WIRED's outreach for commentary on this piece, and after being informed about the findings from AI detection studies, Stubblebine dismissed the notion that Medium is facing a problem with AI. "I'm challenging both the significance of these findings and the notion that these entities uncovered anything noteworthy," he stated.
Stubblebine acknowledges the significant increase in AI-generated content on Medium, estimating a tenfold rise since the start of the year. He expresses a firm stance against AI-created material on the site, highlighting his opposition. However, he raises concerns about the effectiveness of AI detection tools, arguing they fail to distinguish between entirely AI-produced articles and those that use AI assistance to a lesser extent. Contrarily, Spero disputes this, asserting that Pangram is capable of differentiating between content fully generated by ChatGPT and content that starts with an AI framework but is expanded upon by human writing.
Stubblebine reported that Medium experimented with various AI detection tools but found them lacking in efficiency. Furthermore, Stubblebine alleged that Pangram Labs tried to coerce him through media pressure after Spero, the CEO of Pangram, emailed him the analysis outcomes that WIRED had sought, subsequently suggesting their services to Medium. "I believed we could be of assistance to them," stated Spero.
It's true that AI detection tools have their shortcomings. Their method involves scrutinizing texts to forecast outcomes, which can lead to incorrect affirmations or oversights. It's advisable to exercise prudence when applying these tools to assess specific examples of writing and art, particularly as new technologies emerge to outmaneuver them. Nevertheless, they serve a valuable purpose in measuring shifts in the volume of AI-created content across various platforms and sites. These tools are beneficial for researchers, reporters, and the general populace in identifying trends.
"Gillham notes that while AI detection tools are precise, they're not infallible, making it challenging to definitively determine if a specific piece of content was produced by AI. Nevertheless, he highlights their effectiveness in identifying the increasing dominance of AI-generated writing on platforms such as Medium."
The phenomenon has been observed by others as well. "In my routine searches for freshly created AI-driven news platforms, I consistently encounter content produced by AI on Medium every week," notes McKenzie Sadeghi, an editor with NewsGuard, a firm specializing in the monitoring of online misinformation. "I've noticed it predominantly covers topics like cryptocurrency, marketing, and SEO."
Stubblebine firmly believes the statistics fail to reflect the true reader experience on Medium. He argues, "It's irrelevant. Simply accessing the unfiltered stream of Medium posts doesn't show the real interaction—what's recommended and seen. Most AI-created content on these raw feeds for specific topics isn't getting any attention—it has no views. And achieving no views on such content is our aim, which our current system effectively meets." He is confident that Medium is successfully managing its AI-generated content issue through its universal spam filtering and manual moderation efforts.
Numerous profiles that seem to churn out a significant amount of content generated by artificial intelligence often have little to no following. For instance, an account identified by Pangram Labs for possibly creating AI-generated content on cryptocurrency published six times in a single day, yet none of these posts received any engagement, indicating minimal influence. Additionally, some of the content that was flagged has been taken down recently; while some removals might have been at the discretion of the poster, others were likely actioned by Medium days or weeks after they went live. According to Stubblebine, Medium sometimes intentionally delays the eradication of spam content if it is in the process of tracking down "spam rings" that are trying to manipulate the platform.
However, the situation wasn't uniformly devoid of audience engagement. WIRED discovered that several pieces identified as probable AI creations by entities such as Pangram, Originality, and the AI verification firm Reality Defender received numerous "claps" – a form of appreciation akin to "likes" on alternative platforms. This indicates a significantly larger audience than none at all.
Stubblebine views individuals as the key component in Medium's strategy for ensuring content quality. "Currently, Medium relies heavily on human selection," he mentions. He refers to the 9,000 editors working on Medium's platforms, along with further human scrutiny for articles that have the potential to be "promoted" or broadly shared. "One might argue, perhaps in a nitpicking way, that we're excluding AI-generated content—but the overarching objective is actually to weed out content that doesn't meet our quality standards."
In an effort to regulate the influx of content generated by artificial intelligence, Medium has updated its policy on AI this year. This move sets it apart from other social media giants like LinkedIn and Facebook, which actively promote the use of AI by their users. As part of its new regulations, Medium is stopping AI-generated content from being locked behind a paywall in its Partner program, being spread widely through its human-curated Boost program, or being used to push affiliate marketing links. While AI-created content that is openly acknowledged can still be distributed generally on the platform, any AI content not clearly marked as such will only be shared within the "network" distribution level. This essentially limits its visibility to the author's followers. Medium describes AI-generated content as work predominantly produced by an AI program with minimal human intervention, such as editing or fact-checking. The platform also mentioned that it does not possess tools specifically designed to enforce these new AI guidelines. According to Stubblebine, Medium has observed that its current system for curating content naturally weeds out AI-generated submissions due to their inferior quality.
Several contributors and editors on Medium have expressed their appreciation for the platform's strategy regarding artificial intelligence. Eric Pierce, the creator of Fanfare, Medium's top pop culture outlet, mentions that he rarely encounters submissions produced by AI and is of the opinion that Medium's human-led promotion program effectively showcases the platform's top human-authored content. "Over the recent months, I haven't come across any article on Medium that seemed like it could have been generated by AI," he remarks. "Medium is increasingly coming across as a refuge of rationality in an online world that seems to be on the verge of imploding."
Nevertheless, various authors and editors have expressed that they continue to encounter a significant amount of content produced by artificial intelligence on the site. Marcus Musick, a writer specializing in content marketing and editor of multiple publications, shared his concerns in a piece about a particular article he believes to have been created by AI, which gained widespread popularity. Reality Defender, after conducting a review of the said article, assessed that there's a 99 percent probability it was generated through manipulation. The article in question has received extensive attention, garnering more than 13,500 "claps."
Musick, who not only reads but also edits content, is convinced he regularly comes across work generated by AI. He estimates that he turns down about 80% of prospective writers monthly, suspecting their reliance on artificial intelligence for content creation. Rather than depending on AI detection tools, which he deems ineffective, he trusts his own discernment to identify such cases.
The proliferation of content that is likely generated by artificial intelligence on Medium is significant, but it's just a new twist on an old problem for the platform: distinguishing high-quality submissions from low-quality ones. This issue isn't unique to Medium; it's a widespread challenge across the internet, exacerbated by the rise of AI. Previously, the internet contended with click farms, but now, AI gives those focused on search engine optimization a tool to quickly pump out low-quality content, reviving dead media platforms with what can be termed as AI nonsense. Moreover, there's an emerging trend among online entrepreneurs, particularly within the YouTube hustle culture, promoting schemes to make quick money by producing and distributing this kind of content on various platforms, including Facebook, Amazon Kindle, and Medium itself. They often use enticing headlines like “1-Click AI SEO Medium Empire 🤯” to lure people in.
"According to Jonathan Bailey, a consultant on plagiarism, Medium and the internet at large are currently facing a similar challenge. This is largely due to the rapid production of AI-generated content, which has become pervasive. He notes that the most effective measures against this issue are likely spam filters and human moderation teams."
Stubblebine's viewpoint suggests that the presence of low-quality content on a platform isn't as crucial, provided that the platform effectively promotes high-quality writing and restricts the spread of such low-quality content. This perspective might be more practical than trying to completely eliminate AI-generated inferior content. His method of moderation could indeed be the most astute tactic.
The text also forecasts a scenario where the Dead Internet theory becomes a reality. This theory, initially embraced by highly active online individuals prone to conspiracy theories, posits that a significant portion of the internet lacks genuine human presence and content, being overrun instead by artificial intelligence-produced content and automated programs. With the rise of generative AI technologies, online platforms that cease efforts to eliminate bots might foster a digital environment where content genuinely created by humans becomes progressively more difficult to discover, drowned in a sea of AI-generated material.
