Pecco Bagnaia faced a playful inquiry alluding to Valentino Rossi

The 2024 Australian Grand Prix in MotoGP showcased a thrilling showdown for victory between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin.

Gresini's competitor, Marquez, secured his third grand prix victory of the season in a thrilling turn of events. Despite a poor beginning due to a discarded visor tear-off, he managed to overtake Martin in the closing laps.

Martin gave his all to maintain his position at the front, even though it jeopardized his championship standings, but ultimately had to concede to Marquez.

As Francesco Bagnaia faces difficulties, Martin departs from Australia carrying a 20-point lead as he heads to Thailand, currently holding all the momentum in the championship race.

Bagnaia managed to secure a spot on the podium after a challenging weekend in Australia, which was vastly different from his flawless performance at the Japanese Grand Prix.

In other news, Fabio Di Giannantonio performed impressively as his 2024 season is set to conclude sooner than expected because he will undergo shoulder surgery soon. Meanwhile, disruptions caused by wildlife affected local hero Jack Miller's weekend.

Here are the top five highlights from the 2024 Australian Grand Prix.

Comparisons to 2015 are unavoidable but exhausting

Each time MotoGP makes its annual stop at Phillip Island, the memory of 2015 continues to cast a long shadow, making it difficult for many to move past that particular event.

Last weekend, Marc Marquez found himself competing against the two leading contenders for the title, prompting a playful inquiry from renowned Spanish journalist Mela Chercoles. Chercoles asked Bagnaia if Marquez had inadvertently assisted him, reminiscent of when Marquez similarly impacted Valentino Rossi by defeating Jorge Lorenzo in 2015, though Rossi might not have viewed it as a favor. In the race, Marquez managed to take points away from both the factory Ducati rider and Martin.

By securing the win, Marquez deprived Martin of five points. Because of Marquez's involvement, the point difference between Martin and Bagnaia is now 20, whereas it would have been 25 without his interference.

Bagnaia inquires if Marquez did him a favor, to which Marquez, who rides for Gresini, responds: "Today, yes, right? I took five points away from Martin."

Bagnaia commented, "I believe his main focus was on securing a victory. His chances of winning today were quite high since Jorge showed great strength yesterday. Although Jorge had a poor start again today, his speed was impressive, and he ultimately claimed the win. However, I doubt he was reflecting on 2015."

As expected, social media buzzed with claims that Marquez was once more meddling in the championship fight. However, such a claim lacks understanding since Marquez remains a potential title contender, currently holding third place, despite being 79 points behind with 111 points still available.

However, it overlooks the point that any competitor who takes part in a race can influence the championship fight. Enea Bastianini affected the sprint by overtaking Bagnaia for the third position. A rider in 17th place could have also made an impact if they crashed and triggered a red flag while Martin was at the front of the grand prix.

In the end, a race takes place regardless of its impact on the championship standings. It's the responsibility of the title contenders to ensure they achieve the best possible outcomes.

Martin Faces Toughest Challenge in Title Pursuit

Jorge Martin was on the brink of achieving a flawless performance at the Australian Grand Prix. He excelled in qualifying to secure pole position and was unbeatable in the sprint race. Throughout most of the main race, he maintained the lead, but in the end, Marquez overtook him.

Nonetheless, he departs Phillip Island holding a 20-point advantage over Francesco Bagnaia in the championship standings, with only three rounds remaining, and his consistent performance is unrivaled.

Since the summer hiatus, Martin has consistently finished in the top two every Sunday, except on one occasion. Meanwhile, Bagnaia has experienced two races with no points and has managed to outperform Martin in a grand prix only twice, with both instances—Austria and Japan—resulting in victories.

In 2023, Martin's championship aspirations hit a critical point in Australia when his decision to use a soft rear tire ended disastrously. Fast forward to Friday at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, and Martin found himself in significant trouble once again.

The first practice session was called off due to rain, and although the afternoon was dry, the potential for rain loomed throughout. This prompted a hectic beginning to the session, which was crucial for determining direct entry into Q2. Martin had an early mishap, crashing at Turn 4. His second motorcycle was prepared for wet conditions, so his Pramac team needed to fix the bike he had crashed. This repair took up valuable time, and just as Martin was set to rejoin the track, a red flag was raised because a goose wandered onto the circuit, heightening the tension.

Martin successfully advanced to Q2, where he skillfully opted for a hard front tire amid the drying track conditions, securing pole position with a lead of nearly six-tenths of a second. Although a repeat of his commanding sprint race performance seemed possible for the grand prix, he lacked the same grip during the longer race.

Despite this, he was in the lead for 23 out of the 27 laps and actively defended against Marquez's attacks. Although he finished in second place, he consistently outperformed Bagnaia throughout the weekend, demonstrating his strong determination as the championship battle intensifies.

Bezzecchi and Vinales collision underscores aerodynamic issues

The frightening collision involving Marco Bezzecchi and Maverick Vinales during the sprint race resulted in Bezzecchi receiving a penalty, which was expected.

After Bezzecchi's hospital visit on Saturday delayed the final decision until Sunday, it became obvious that the VR46 racer had applied the brakes slightly later than usual, making it his responsibility to steer clear of the incident.

The stewards' detailed explanation, which was a refreshing departure from their usual panel document, was fascinating because they acknowledged that the turbulent air caused by Vinales' Aprilia played a role in the incident.

The stewards evaluated the impact of the turbulent air resulting from car #12's maneuver and acknowledged that this disruption could, in this case, provide some justification for car #72's actions, which included easing off the throttle, reapplying it, and braking at a later point, as indicated in their statement.

Consequently, they reduced the penalty to just one long lap, instead of the two that would typically be imposed in normal situations.

The decision by the stewards to view the aerodynamics of Vinales' motorcycle as a mitigating factor in the incident adds weight to the safety concerns related to aero design. In 2027, changes to the rules will reduce the use of aerodynamics, though they will not be entirely removed. The incident involving Vinales and Bezzecchi highlights the need for such a reduction.

Wildlife causes chaos, but what solutions are there?

Is it Jack 0 – Seagull 1, or perhaps the opposite? 💥😅 Things began well in the Sprint, but an unexpected collision with a seagull disrupted the ride… far from perfect 🤦‍♂️ Despite that, I felt confident, but unfortunately, the bike faltered at Turn 10. It's just one of those days! Eagerly anticipating what tomorrow brings 🤟 pic.twitter.com/AMjwe5CPLJ— Jack Miller (@jackmilleraus) October 19, 2024

Visiting Phillip Island often involves witnessing some kind of wildlife-related event. A memorable instance is Andrea Iannone's collision with a seagull during the 2015 Grand Prix, which many people still talk about.

During Friday's practice rounds, there were multiple interruptions as geese wandered onto the track. On Saturday, local favorite Jack Miller had an unfortunate encounter with the area's animals. In the first qualifying session, he collided with a rabbit, which resulted in damage to the fairing of his bike. Additionally, during the first lap of the sprint, he hit a seagull, leaving a "gaping hole" in the front fairing.

In the end, the incident with the rabbit prevented him from competing for a spot in Q2, which could have significantly improved his weekend. During the sprint, a collision with a bird slowed him down by 10 km/h on the straight portions of the track and caused braking issues when a seagull became stuck behind his brake lever.

"Undoubtedly, Phillip Island is home to a significant amount of wildlife," commented Jorge Martin. "It's crucial that measures are taken to prevent animals from entering the track, as their presence during a race could lead to serious complications and problems."

Martin highlighted that the wildlife present at Phillip Island requires teams to adjust their approach on the track, as sessions may be abruptly halted with a red flag if an animal ventures onto the course.

Phillip Island makes significant efforts to manage and deter wildlife when needed, yet this is a challenging and complex issue. The threat posed by these animals is considerable, indicating that additional measures are required.

Discussion on Replacement for Di Giannantonio

Fabio di Giannantonio has been contemplating undergoing surgery for a shoulder injury he sustained at the Austrian Grand Prix. Initially, it seemed he would continue to race for the rest of the season, but just before the Australian GP, it was announced that he would not.

The VR46 team competitor is set to compete in Thailand this weekend, after which he will return home for surgery. Undergoing the procedure at this time aims to ensure he is fully recovered in time for the start of pre-season trials, where he will be riding a GP25.

Despite dealing with an injury, Di Giannantonio displayed remarkable determination by securing a fourth-place finish in the grand prix. In the final laps, he was closing in on Bagnaia, who was having difficulties.

Ultimately, Di Giannantonio finished the race less than three seconds shy of securing a spot on the podium, describing the experience as "bittersweet."

Discussions are now focused on finding a substitute for the last two rounds. Andrea Iannone, a former grand prix victor, is making waves in the news after completing a four-year suspension for doping just before the 2024 season began.

The GoEleven Ducati team extended a career-saving opportunity to the 35-year-old for the 2024 World Superbikes season. He has performed admirably, securing a victory in Aragon and achieving several podium finishes. GPOne reports that he is the leading contender for the VR46 seat in the final rounds of the MotoGP season.

This would be his initial participation in MotoGP races since he last competed in Valencia in 2019 with Aprilia. Following that event, he was retrospectively disqualified due to violations of anti-doping regulations.

There is ongoing discussion about whether he truly merits this chance in MotoGP, especially when compared to the promising WSBK newcomer, Nicolo Bulega. The Italian racer secured second place in the championship after transitioning to the WSBK scene in 2022, following the decline of his grand prix journey. Previously part of the VR46 Academy, Bulega receiving a MotoGP opportunity would be a fitting recognition for his performance in WSBK. At only 25 years old, it could also serve as a significant showcase for his future prospects.
