Alex Marquez Shines at Phillip Island Practice Despite Challenges, Completes Gresini 1-2 with Brother Marc
Alex Marquez secures second place for Gresini, foregoing celebrations
In Friday's practice at Phillip Island, Alex Marquez trailed only behind his brother Marc, securing the second-fastest time.
Alex Marquez finished an impressive second, right behind his brother and fellow team member Marc Marquez, in a Gresini team sweep during the Friday practice session for the Australian MotoGP.
Following a downpour that led to the abandonment of FP1, the #73 rider concluded the intense afternoon session merely 0.102 seconds behind his sibling.
Significantly, prior to his time trial, Alex distinguished himself as one of the limited number of riders who collected information on the medium rear tyre designed to resist heat, whereas the majority opted solely for the soft option.
"The circumstances were challenging, but that's typical for Phillip Island, where rapid adaptation is crucial," Alex explained to MotoGP.com. "I was immediately quick and maintained a steady pace from the outset, which is promising."
"In the subsequent stages of the time trials, fortune wasn't on our side due to numerous yellow flags. However, luck turned in my favor allowing me to perform exceptionally well in both the first and second sectors, trailing Marc."
"Subsequently, I found myself in solitude, yet I maintained my rhythm and managed to clock an impressive lap… It could easily be considered among my top performances."
"Riding the bike, you're swift and it's enjoyable. Today was filled with excitement. That was the main factor."
However, following his inability to complete the previous two Grand Prix races and entering Sunday's competition with a significant lap penalty due to a collision with Joan Mir at Motegi, Marquez remains realistic and grounded in his expectations.
"I'm pleased with our beginning. However, I remain mindful of our origins, so I refrain from over-celebrating a Friday. After all, Friday signifies nothing," he stated.
"We must continue on this path. It's essential to identify areas for enhancement. Let's assess the condition of the tires. Also, we need to strategize for tomorrow to ensure we perform well in both the qualifying round and the subsequent Sprint."
"Clearly, the penalty from Sunday will affect us, particularly given the positive momentum, but we'll manage it."
When asked about the new asphalt at Phillip Island, Marquez acknowledged that the traction is satisfactory but expressed astonishment at the presence of some uneven surfaces.
"He mentioned that the fresh tarmac offers excellent traction, though it's rather uneven. He had anticipated a smoother surface, yet found it notably rough, despite the remarkable grip it provides."
"Having a dry afternoon was beneficial, as otherwise, tomorrow could present challenges for the tyres in particular."
