Wolff Ends Verstappen Courtship to Focus on Mercedes’ New Era with Russell and Antonelli
Toto Wolff dismisses speculation about Max Verstappen potentially joining Mercedes
"To me, it's akin to seeking attention elsewhere while trying to ensure your current relationship succeeds. That approach doesn't fly with me; I'm not seeking alternatives."
Toto Wolff has declared he will cease his "overtures" towards Max Verstappen, opting instead to fully back Mercedes' F1 drivers for the 2025 season.
Wolff has openly expressed his desire to bring Verstappen on board ever since the surprising news of Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari was made public in February.
Nonetheless, given Verstappen's decision to stay with Red Bull, Mercedes has elevated the prodigious talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli to race alongside George Russell in the 2025 F1 season.
Wolff has indicated that he will cease his public admiration for Verstappen, given that the Dutch driver appears to be out of reach for the time being.
He explained to Motorsport.com, "We're taking a step back. As I've mentioned previously, and Max agrees, it's crucial to trust your drivers and team. Offering the fullest support possible is essential for success. Only if the situation seriously deteriorates would we look into alternative options.
To me, it's akin to seeking attention elsewhere while trying to maintain your current relationship. It's not effective, and I'm not engaging in seeking attention outside.
"I would only initiate a conversation if I'm contemplating a change, and the same goes for him. I believe we share a similar mindset regarding our values in this aspect."
Wolff has emphasized that both Russell and Antonelli will be given equal support and that Hamilton's departure will not alter their approach.
"He emphasized that their impact is minimal, noting that they provide consistent emotional backing without any alteration.
All leading Formula 1 drivers understand the necessity of competing with their team-mate, regardless of age. For the past three years, George has had the privilege of having Lewis Hamilton, considered the best driver in history, as his teammate.
"Therefore, he'll manage well in the competition against one of the younger contenders, who arrives with high hopes."
