Volvo CEO Advocates for Europe’s Gas Car Ban by 2035 Amid Adjusted Electrification Goals
The chief executive of Volvo is advocating for Europe to continue with its intention to stop the sale of new gasoline-powered cars, despite the company delaying its transition to a fully electric fleet until later this decade. The executive remains in favor of Europe's aim to discontinue new sales of vehicles with traditional engines by the mid-2030s.
Volvo, along with 49 other firms, has endorsed a statement imploring the EU to maintain its existing schedule that anticipates the prohibition of selling new gasoline or diesel-powered cars in its member states by the year 2035. Nevertheless, there is an exception in the policy for synthetic fuels, meaning that cars with combustion engines might continue to be marketed if these alternative fuels are available in large quantities and comply with prescribed emission standards.

Volvo Cars' chief executive, Jim Rowan, emphasized that electrifying the industry is the most significant step towards reducing its carbon emissions in response to the EU's strategy. While Rivian has also endorsed the initiative, many leading car manufacturers have yet to sign on, as reported by Bloomberg. The report also highlighted that the commitment was made by businesses beyond the automotive sector, with names such as Ikea and Uber among the supporters.
Since its initial unveiling in 2021, the European Union's strategy has faced continuous opposition. In 2023, Germany managed to negotiate an exception for artificial fuels, and Italian authorities have now labeled the strategy as "ridiculous." They argue that the gradual reduction of emission limits in the lead-up to the prohibition on internal combustion engines should be decelerated to accommodate evolving market dynamics.

In a recent turn of events, Volvo has revised its previously set target from 2021, which was to fully transition to electric vehicles by 2030. The company now foresees that by that deadline, electric vehicles (EVs) or plug-in hybrids will make up 90% of its production, while the rest will be equipped with mild-hybrid engines.
Volvo's Chief Operating Officer, Björn Annwall, conveyed to Green Car Reports that the car manufacturer is ready to halt the sale of gas-powered vehicles regardless of ongoing consumer interest. He also indicated that the company's plug-in hybrids are set to progress, providing greater electric mileage with more compact engines.
