Volkswagen’s Electrifying Promise: 8 Affordable EVs by 2027, Including the ID.2 Hatchback

Published

on

Volkswagen is set to introduce eight budget-friendly electric cars by the year 2027, according to CEO Thomas Schåfer, who spoke with the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, with Reuters reporting on the discussion.

Schåfer emphasized in the conversation that they must manufacture their cars in a cost-effective manner and offer them to consumers at reasonable prices.

According to the same source, the ID.2 is among the budget-friendly options that are being fast-tracked. The development process is believed to be shortened to a span of 36 months as opposed to the earlier projection of 50 months. This acceleration is probably essential to ensure the electric hatchback is prepared for its scheduled reveal in 2025.

Concept design for Volkswagen ID.2all

In 2023, Volkswagen gave a sneak peek of the ID.2 through its concept model, the ID.2all, which resembles the Golf. They announced that the market-ready model would be designed to be cost-effective in terms of manufacturing and retail price, with an estimated price tag of roughly $26,500. To keep costs down, the ID.2 is set to utilize an adapted version of the existing MEB platform, which is already in use in Volkswagen's current electric vehicles such as the ID.4, and this version will be known as MEB Entry.

The car manufacturer is also considering a more affordable electric vehicle with a starting price near $22,000. It may take inspiration from the ID.Life concept that VW introduced in 2021, which they mentioned would utilize a simplified version of the MEB platform, known as MEB Small.

The Volkswagen ID.Life is a concept car model

The availability of the ID.2 and its more affordable counterpart in the United States remains uncertain. However, Volkswagen has announced intentions to introduce an electric vehicle priced below $35,000 for the American market. Considering the schedule outlined by Volkswagen back in November—suggesting a three to four-year timeline—this vehicle is expected to debut by 2027, which might make it one of the eight models alluded to by Schåfer.

Expanding its focus from the core Volkswagen marque, the Volkswagen Group has set a target to launch 25 fully electric vehicles specifically for the U.S. market by the year 2030. Each of these vehicles has the potential to be eligible for the maximum $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit, provided they are manufactured within the United States.

CEO Musk hinted that Tesla's autonomous electric vehicles, which charge without cords, might compete with public transportation in terms of affordability and ease of use.

The company has expanded its reach to all 50 states and introduced two storage size options for residential use, which are included in packages that enable electric vehicles to function as large-scale power storage units.

The 2025 model of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid remains unchanged.

Honda has created a manual gearbox designed for electric vehicles, though it's uncertain whether this innovation will make it to the manufacturing stage.

Owners of specific Nissan Leaf models are being cautioned against using rapid charging for their electric vehicles until a software upgrade is completed.

GM is preparing to introduce less expensive LFP batteries in the upcoming version of its Bolt, which could potentially make it the most cost-effective electric vehicle available, even as it phases out the Ultium label from its electric vehicles.

Uber patrons now have the option to choose an electric vehicle for their commute to ensure a journey without exhaust emissions.

California now hosts the initial police vehicle modeled after the Tesla Cybertruck.

Nissan's partnership with ChargeScape could be a step forward in realizing its 2016 goal of creating the "fuel station of the future."

General Motors has decided to abandon the Ultium label previously used to identify its electric vehicle technology, batteries, and underlying architecture.

The potential for electric vehicle owners to customize their cars with downloadable sounds and dashboard displays could be a feature of tomorrow's cars.
