Uber Accelerates Green Initiative: EV-Only Rides, High-End Electric Pop-Ups, and AI Support for Drivers

Uber introduces an option for passengers to choose electric vehicles, as well as an AI messaging system for drivers. Uber aims to boost the use of electric vehicles in its ride-hailing platform by modifying its application to facilitate smoother connections between passengers and electric vehicle drivers.

Uber is initiating a shift towards a completely electric Uber Green service in select cities. As of now, Uber Green features a mix of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid cars. However, as of Tuesday, Uber has disclosed that it has a sufficient number of EV operators to transition to all-electric rides in more than 40 cities around the world. The company asserts that the cost for these rides will be comparable to the current UberX rates.

Uber is introducing a new feature in its application that allows users to select an option to consistently pair them with an electric vehicle if one is available in their vicinity. This means users won't need to manually choose the Uber Green service each time. However, this convenience might not be beneficial if there are no electric vehicles in the area at the time of their ride request.

Customers in select cities will have the unique chance to experience rides in luxury electric vehicles, diverging from the usual Hyundai Ioniq 5 options. Uber plans to introduce temporary offerings featuring the Lotus Eletre in London and Rivian R1 vehicles in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Miami.

Prototype Vehicle Unveiled

Uber plans to introduce an artificial intelligence chatbot using OpenAI's GPT-4 technology to assist drivers with electric vehicle-related inquiries. Additionally, they're rolling out an "EV mentorship program" to facilitate knowledge sharing between seasoned electric vehicle operators and those just starting out. In the United Kingdom, a group of 1,000 drivers will be equipped with complimentary home charging stations courtesy of Octopus Energy, alongside a discount of 8% for using public charging stations on Octopus's network. This initiative receives joint financial support from Octopus Energy and the Chinese car manufacturer BYD. BYD had previously declared in August its intention to supply Uber with 100,000 electric vehicles and to collaborate on the development of self-driving cars.

Uber aims to shift to a fully electric fleet by the year 2030. However, this transition heavily depends on whether drivers opt for electric vehicles instead of those with traditional combustion engines. Although Uber has been engaged in developing its own electric vehicles, specifically for its ride-sharing service, and even unveiled a prototype created by the startup Arrival in 2021, production of these vehicles hasn't started. In city environments, Uber has been making efforts to improve charging infrastructure, an example being the around-the-clock charging station by Revel in Manhattan.
