Chinese customers have openly expressed their eagerness for Apple to introduce its innovative AI services to China at the earliest.
The CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, had a conversation with China's leading industry authority on Wednesday, discussing various subjects, as per an official statement from China. However, the statement did not disclose any details regarding the launch of the company's artificial intelligence (AI) service in the nation.
Cook had a meeting with Jin Zhuanglong, the leader of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), to talk about a range of subjects, from Apple's ongoing expansion in China, one of its biggest international markets, to issues of cybersecurity, data protection, and cloud computing services, as reported in a statement released by the regulatory body on Wednesday. The ministry plays a crucial role in monitoring AI application in China.
The announcement didn't specify if the discussion included Chinese market entry for Apple Intelligence, the collection of generative AI (GenAI) services set to debut shortly in some nations but not in China. In China, a license from the Beijing government is mandatory for any public launch of GenAI software. As per the data from August, China has sanctioned 188 GenAI services for its domestic users, all created by local companies.
Experts suggest that the absence of Apple Intelligence in the Chinese market could negatively impact iPhone sales in the region. This is due to local competitors such as Xiaomi and Oppo highlighting the enhancement of their devices' capabilities, from content creation to photo editing, through the integration of Artificial Intelligence.
Chinese customers have also expressed their eagerness for Apple to introduce its GenAI services, anticipated to be launched with the iOS 18.1 update on October 28, to China at the earliest opportunity.
In response to a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo, detailing Cook's recent trip to China, one individual inquired if the purpose of his visit was to discuss AI deployment with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
Jin from MIIT stated during the meeting with Cook that China is generating fresh opportunities for international businesses. He also mentioned that they anticipate Apple to strengthen their relationship with the country by persistently investing in market innovation, as per the announcement.
