Tesla’s Revolutionary Cybercab and Robovan Unveiled: Musk’s Vision for Autonomous Future and Competition with Public Transit

At an event on Thursday evening, Elon Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, unveiled the Cybercab, a self-driving taxi. This electric vehicle, which is highly integrated with Tesla's advanced autonomous driving technology, is designed without a steering wheel or pedals. The company has announced that the Cybercab, priced at $30,000, is expected to hit the market "before 2027," and they also showcased a concept Robovan that can accommodate up to 20 passengers.

Tesla has faced criticism for not including traditional indicators and gear sticks in their updated 2024 Tesla Model 3 models. However, it appears that Musk is focusing on a vision of the future where such manual controls are obsolete, envisioning a world dominated by self-driving cars that could challenge public transportation systems.

Musk, speaking at an exclusive event on a Warner Bros. Studio stage in Burbank, California, suggested that the expense of self-driving transport could become so affordable that it might be likened to personalized public transportation.

Musk asserts that the typical expense for operating a bus, excluding the fare, is roughly one dollar for every mile traveled per person. In contrast, he estimates that the Cybercab's operational costs will likely be approximately 20 cents per mile, with the total cost reaching 30 to 40 cents per mile once taxes and additional charges are factored in.

Tesla aims to set the cost of the Cybercab under $30,000, capitalizing on the long-standing anticipation around Tesla's autonomous taxi service. Musk initially pledged back in 2019 to deploy a collection of profit-making, autonomous Tesla taxis as a component of the Tesla Network by 2020.

Caught on camera navigating the studio space, the dual-seater vehicle seems to fall within the small to medium range in terms of American size standards. Tesla has kept information about the car's underlying mechanics, its driving force, or its design framework under wraps. As such, until Green Car Reports has the opportunity for a detailed inspection, we're referring to these models as concept vehicles.

When they eventually come into play, Musk suggested a management approach where private owners oversee self-driving car groups, comparing it to the way shepherds look after their sheep. There was no discussion about the experience of being in the vehicle or how it handles; the attention was solely on practical financial outcomes.

Could upcoming Tesla models transition to wireless charging methods?

During his talk, Musk revealed that the upcoming Cybercab, which he referred to as Robotaxi interchangeably, will exclusively employ wireless inductive charging technology. “There's no plug for the Robotaxi. It simply drives over the wireless charger to recharge, which is essentially how it's meant to work,” he said.

Considering the move towards exclusive use of wireless charging for an upcoming offering, coupled with Tesla's scaled-back efforts in expanding their Supercharger network, it appears that Tesla's strategy for its public charging infrastructure could be undergoing significant alterations in the near future.

Musk envisions self-driving Teslas competing with mass transportation

In line with his previous discussions, Musk spent some time contemplating the societal implications of autonomous taxi services—a scenario where these self-driving cars could potentially rival traditional public transportation networks.

Musk points out that a typical car is in use for roughly 10 hours during an entire week, which has 168 hours.

"He suggested that currently, cars spend most of their existence idle. However, if they were self-driving, their usage could potentially increase by fivefold, or even tenfold."

Essentially, self-driving cars could congest roadways just as cars driven by people do now, yet all those inside will have the liberty to utilize their vehicles as relaxation or productivity areas.

Musk further mentioned that with cars being in constant operation, the demand for parking spaces would decrease, presenting a chance to convert these areas into parks and restore some greenery.

Musk has revealed that Tesla anticipates launching complete self-driving capability without human oversight in their Model 3 and Model Y vehicles across Texas and California by 2025. He added, “Following that, we aim to roll out the Cybercab, designed specifically for self-driven transportation.”

Musk then moderated his earlier comment, acknowledging his usual tendency towards overestimation concerning timelines. He clarified, saying, "Let’s say before 2027—to frame it better—we plan to produce the Cybercab at a large scale. However, long before this, you’ll get a taste of an autonomous taxi through our Model 3 and Model Y initiative."

In discussing Tesla's self-driving technology, Musk reiterated his previous statements, emphasizing that Tesla's automotive computer, enhanced by data from millions of vehicles and capable of vigilant 360-degree perception, can surpass human driving safety due to its immunity to fatigue and distraction. Musk predicts that driverless vehicles will achieve a safety record that is at least tenfold better than human drivers, highlighting the dual benefits of giving people their time back and significantly reducing both fatalities and injuries on the road.

In 2022, Tesla came under investigation by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission concerning the company's assertions about its autonomous driving capabilities. This led to a mandated safety recall in the form of a remote software update, after federal authorities decreed that the manner in which Tesla's urban-capable driving aid, known as Full Self-Driving Beta, was being utilized represented "an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety."

The Chief Executive Officer mentioned that for the Cybercab, Tesla intends to equip the vehicle with a computer that exceeds the necessary specifications. This will enable the cars to be used for shared computing tasks. He compared it to Amazon Web Services, highlighting that even if a car is on the road for 50 hours a week, there's still an excess of 100 hours available for other uses.

Musk left it ambiguous as to whether owners would be renting out their car's computational capabilities or if this concept is incorporated into Tesla's strategy to maintain a lower price point for their vehicles.

Robovan is designed to embody a futuristic aesthetic, resembling a personal C-3PO. Tesla unveiled the Robovan (with a stress on "bo"), which is an elongated, self-driving electric van, similar in concept to GM's discontinued Cruise Origin initiative. It features a retro, dark appearance reminiscent of science fiction trains from the 1930s to 1950s, and is equipped to carry either goods or a maximum of 20 passengers. Elon Musk has hinted at the concept of a Tesla Robovan on several occasions, and its unique design sets it apart.

Musk declared their intention to construct the project, emphasizing its design and the possibility of reducing the price per mile for each passenger to a range of 5 to 10 cents.

"We aim to transform the appearance of our streets, as demonstrated by the Cybertruck," he continued. "The future ought to have a futuristic aesthetic."

Musk acknowledged that while he has a known preference for grim, dystopian narratives about what lies ahead, he's actually striving to create a vision of the future that's more about enjoyment and thrill with these new offerings.

Tesla reportedly boasted about having a total of 50 self-driving vehicles available during the event, which included a mix of Model Ys and Cybercabs, with several of them offering rides to attendees.

Musk unveiled the latest version of the Optimus humanoid robot, highlighting its significant advancements with each passing year.

Musk suggests that if we continue to develop this technology, we'll eventually have access to something extraordinary, akin to owning a personalized R2-D2 or C-3PO. He highlighted that such a robot would be more affordable than a vehicle. Its capabilities would include educating or caring for children, walking pets, cutting the grass, shopping for groceries, providing beverage service, or simply offering companionship.
