Tech Cold War Escalates: OpenAI Thwarts Suspected China-Linked Phishing Attack
Technology Battle: OpenAI reports thwarting an alleged phishing assault linked to China on its employees
The American enterprise claims SweetSpecter, an assumed group from China, impersonated a ChatGPT user and dispatched malware-infected emails to its personnel.
The AI company announced on Wednesday that a group believed to be from China, known as SweetSpecter, impersonated a user of OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, earlier this year and communicated with the staff through customer service emails.
The emails contained malicious attachments which, upon being opened, would have enabled SweetSpecter to capture screen images and extract information, according to OpenAI. However, the effort did not succeed.
OpenAI's security department got in touch with staff members thought to have been the focus of this spear phishing attempt. OpenAI stated that the current security measures in place successfully blocked these emails from ever arriving in their business inboxes.
The Chinese administration has consistently refuted claims from the United States that groups within its borders are orchestrating cyberattacks, blaming external entities for launching defamation efforts.
