BMW Recalls i7 and i5 Electric Sedans Due to Faulty Steering Components

BMW is issuing a recall for its i7 and i5 models due to a steering defect that may cause increased difficulty in maneuvering the steering wheel.

The NHTSA has announced a recall affecting 202 BMW i5 sedans from the 2024 and 2025 model years, along with 21 BMW i7 sedans from 2024, including their non-electric variants. The reason for the recall is that the steering spindles in these vehicles may not meet the proper specifications required for their intended use.

Under specific circumstances, the pivot point within the spindle's twin hinge joint may fracture, leading to a sudden rise in the force needed to accurately maneuver the car, as per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Should this happen, operators might detect a sound emanating from the steering shaft and experience "alterations in how the steering responds," as stated in the recall notices.

BMW has informed the NHTSA that although there is a noticeable rise in the force needed to steer, which could potentially lead to accidents, they have not been notified of any incidents or personal harm stemming from this problem. Additionally, there have been no warranty claims or grievances from customers brought to their attention. The company first identified the issue upon discovering defective steering spindles in their manufacturing facilities.

Authorized dealerships are set to swap out the problematic double universal joints at no cost to the vehicle owners. Notification letters from BMW are scheduled to be dispatched to owners on November 15. The i5 and i7 represent BMW's electric adaptations of their traditional 5-Series and 7-Series four-door cars, respectively. They maintain the same body design and the majority of components with their fossil fuel-powered versions. BMW has recently adopted a strategy of creating electric variants of its current lineup. However, the company is transitioning toward a new approach with its forthcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicles, which will be built on a specialized platform.
