Snap Integrates Google’s Gemini in Snapchat’s AI Chatbot: A Leap in Multimodal AI with Spectacles Compatibility
Snap has joined forces with Google to enhance Snapchat's AI chatbot using Gemini, a competitor to OpenAI GPT. Snap's AI chatbot, My AI, is designed to work with Spectacles, the company's recently launched augmented-reality smart glasses.
Snap introduced its My AI chatbot last year, which was created using the generative AI models from OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. However, the company has recently begun to utilize Gemini, Google's extensive language model, as it has the ability to handle video, audio, and text all at once, a feature referred to as multimodal AI.
The significance of that capability is highlighted by the fact that Snapchat users frequently converse using videos and pictures, besides text, according to Snap's CEO, Evan Spiegel.
"Conversations with advanced linguistic models have consistently been intriguing," stated Spiegel, however, he also pointed out that the interaction when sharing images and videos with a chatbot hasn't kept up. Given that sharing images and videos is the primary method of communication for Snapchat users, this has "impeded our vision" of the product's potential growth, he remarked.
