Shifting the Electric Paradigm: Honda Tests Manual Transmission and Iconic Engine Sounds for EVs

Honda has developed a stick shift for electric vehicles

The common belief is that electric vehicles, which typically operate without multi-speed transmissions, don't require them and could even be less efficient with them. Despite this, Honda is exploring the concept of a manual gearbox for electric vehicles.

During a recent press event focusing on the technological advancements of the upcoming Honda 0 Series electric vehicles, an engineer revealed to The Drive that the company is experimenting with a manual transmission that includes a clutch pedal for their EVs. However, Honda has not disclosed any details regarding the production of this feature.

Should the concept reach the manufacturing stage, there's a possibility that simulated sounds of a traditional combustion engine will be incorporated. At the same press conference, Honda demonstrated how it can mimic the auditory experience of their classic vehicles such as the S2000, CRX, and NSX-R, along with the newer NSX Type S and the latest Civic Type R, within its electric vehicles.

Automatic gearboxes might suffice for the efficiency and functioning of electric vehicles, yet there is a belief among certain car designers and industry leaders that integrating manual gear systems in high-performance electric cars could maintain the engagement of drivers and appeal to aficionados accustomed to traditional petrol vehicles.

During his time as head of Toyota, Akio Toyoda was a proponent of incorporating a clutch pedal with a manual gearbox in electric vehicles. In a discussion from 2023, Toyoda expressed his desire to deliver an authentic driving sensation akin to that of traditional petrol cars, including the possibility of stalling, but without the petrol fumes. This was a foreseeable stance from Toyoda, who has racing in his blood as the descendant of the company's creator, and who has advocated for an increased line-up of high-performance vehicles, including the relaunched Supra sports car, during his leadership.

Hyundai previously attempted to create a comparable experience without incorporating actual gears and a manual clutch. The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N includes programmed shift intervals and an engineered audio track, all controlled through digital programming.
