Revving Up the Silence: Honda’s Novel Approach to Enhance EV Driving Experience with Classic Engine Sounds
Honda is curious if you'd enjoy the noise of a gasoline engine in your electric vehicle. The soon-to-arrive Honda 0 Series electric vehicles are expected to have a very quiet interior.
Would you prefer your Honda electric vehicle to occasionally mimic the sound of a S2000 roadster at full throttle? Or perhaps you'd enjoy a throwback to the dashboard display and the distinctive hum of the CRX Si that you used to own?
Upcoming User Experience to include Honda Electric Vehicle Sports Audio Option
During a recent demonstration, I experienced a new Digital UX Concept within a Honda e designed for the Japanese market. This previewed potential affordable features Honda may offer in upcoming electric vehicles. The 0 Series introduces Honda's latest user interface, including face recognition technology, consistent updates delivered wirelessly, and the possibility of making in-car transactions, depending on regional availability.
Besides the S2000 and CRX, alternatives encompassed the latest Civic Type R, the NSX Type S that was introduced in the early 2000s, and the ultimate version of the initial NSX-R, a mid-engine sports car from 2002.
Upcoming Honda electric vehicles to include unique sports audio for enhanced user
Every demonstration updated the dashboard display to mimic the appearance of the classic car's dials, allowing for rapid acceleration tests while stationary. Honda pointed out that this setup reacts to changes when the car is in motion, taking into account both velocity and how much the gas pedal is pressed, yet it does not replicate shifting gears.
A standout at the event was the Honda Jet. Simulating a takeoff was achieved by slowly increasing the throttle in the scenario.
The seamless nature of this feature's integration is impressive. For those who find it too novel, the standard silence option remains. Importantly, the sounds are confined to the interior, leaving those outside the vehicle none the wiser.

The possibility of offering add-on modules for a nominal charge is currently being evaluated. These modules may not be limited to the forthcoming 0 Series electric vehicles. The new user interface being created for the 0 Series is expected to be integrated across all of Honda's offerings, extending to hybrid and traditional gas-powered models.
Opinions vary on the noise electric vehicles make, especially when it's not a matter of safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has disapproved of electric vehicle drivers choosing their own pedestrian alert noises. This includes features such as Tesla's Boombox, which initially overpowered the required warning noises by the government. However, Tesla enthusiasts have the option to purchase additional sound devices that mimic traditional engine noises for their vehicles. Moreover, the soon-to-be-released Dodge Charger Daytona electric model boasts its distinctive sound.
