Pedro Acosta Reflects on Heartbreaking Double DNF at Motegi: ‘Difficult to Accept’
Pedro Acosta describes his "hard to swallow" second crash at the Motegi MotoGP. The Tech3 newcomer experiences a double Did Not Finish (DNF) after starting from pole position in Japan.
Pedro Acosta expressed that it was "hard to come to terms with" his fall from second place during the MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix, as he experienced a second consecutive race without finishing, despite starting from pole position at Motegi.
On Saturday, the 20-year-old rider achieved his inaugural MotoGP pole position after securing the fastest time in the Q2 session, thanks to a late lap annulment for Marc Marquez.
Acosta seemed poised to secure his first sprint victory, as he was in the lead for a significant portion of the half-distance race on Saturday, but then he crashed at Turn 7.
Acosta, who was in second place during the grand prix, seemed to be the main challenger to eventual victor Francesco Bagnaia. However, his chances were dashed when he crashed at Turn 14 as he concluded the third lap.
In an explanation of the events, Acosta mentioned that he was attempting to improve his approach onto the main straight. He was facing some difficulty staying close to Pecco in order to make an overtaking move.
"However, it was an error on my part."
"It's hard to comment on this situation. Certainly, it was extremely close. We'll give it another shot in Australia."
"In my opinion, the sensation was much like it was the day before. It's hard to come to terms with the accident. We'll make another attempt in Australia, as we are making progress."
Despite his somber mood, Acosta remained optimistic about his speed at Motegi, viewing it as an extension of the improved performance he has demonstrated since the San Marino Grand Prix weekend.
"I'm in high spirits this weekend," he mentioned.
"Australia is typically a circuit where we perform well. Brad's performance last season is evidence of this."
"We need to check the condition of the asphalt and the performance of the tires, as these factors are uncertain."
Tech3 team manager Nicolas Goyon agreed with Acosta's views, and he also thinks that this experience will help the rookie become "stronger."
He expressed that they truly believed they were in a position to experience one of their most successful weekends of the season.
Pedro was pleased with the performance of the bike and how everything was functioning, so experiencing a DNF today was challenging, particularly while competing at the front.
"We must take lessons from our errors, and I am confident this will help him become a more resilient cyclist."
