Over 27,000 Porsche Taycans Recalled for Potential Fire Risk Due to Battery Short Circuit
Porsche has issued a recall for more than 27,000 of its Taycan vehicles, with the problem traced back to a potential short circuit within the electric vehicle's battery pack.
On the first day of the week, the federal agency responsible for road safety, the NHTSA, announced a recall for select Porsche Taycan models from the years 2021 to 2024. The reason for this recall is a potential short circuit issue in the high-voltage battery pack found within the battery module, posing a heightened fire risk.
In the month of April, Porsche issued a recall for 606 of their Taycan models due to a potential risk of the battery packs short-circuiting and igniting. At this time, it's not certain whether this latest recall is related to the previous one or a separate issue, although the problems and solutions appear to be identical.
Porsche has issued a recall affecting 27,527 Taycan vehicles.
Initial assessments indicate that the problem originates from a manufacturing error by a supplier, as stated by Porsche. LG is responsible for providing the battery pack, which is put together in Poland.
Porsche has stated that there is no way to detect or receive an advance alert when a short circuit is imminent in the battery pack.
Porsche has announced that its dealerships will be equipped with sophisticated diagnostic software; however, the availability of this software is anticipated for the early months of 2025.
Porsche has no knowledge of any of its vehicles encountering problems.
Porsche has announced that it will keep an eye on the data from their vehicles available online and reach out to car owners if needed. The company will advise Taycan owners to limit their car's charge to 80% capacity. This measure will stay in place until Porsche is able to switch out the high-voltage battery pack.
For vehicles without accessible online information, dealerships are directed to conduct a diagnostic examination and change the battery if needed. Additionally, car owners are advised to limit their vehicle's charge to 80%.
Porsche has announced that they will start sending out letters to inform vehicle owners on the 29th of November
Individuals needing to reach out to Porsche may do so by dialing 1-800-PORSCHE, or they can get in touch with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by calling 1-888-DASH-2-DOT. For this particular recall, the reference code to use when contacting the agency is 24
