Nico Rosberg Advises Lando Norris to Eliminate Mistakes for F1 Championship Bid
Nico Rosberg, the Formula 1 world champion, has highlighted that Lando Norris must reduce his errors if he aspires to win an F1 championship.
Nico Rosberg believes Lando Norris needs to rectify mistakes to secure a Formula 1 world title.
Norris secured a commanding win at the Singapore Grand Prix, significantly reducing Max Verstappen's lead in the championship standings. The distance between the two contenders has been narrowed to 52 points, with six races left in the season and a total of 180 points still up for grabs.
Norris successfully broke his pattern of relinquishing the lead in the initial lap of Formula 1 races by turning his pole position into a dominant third victory of the year, despite encountering two near-misses with the walls.
2016 global title-holder Rosberg characterized these errors as "quite peculiar" and emphasized that the McLaren racer needs to eliminate such mistakes to stand any chance of surpassing Verstappen for the title.
"Rosberg expressed his thoughts on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, saying, 'When everyone keeps asking, "Lando, you've secured pole position seven times, yet each time, by the end of the first lap, you're no longer leading. What mistakes are you making, and does it concern you that you might falter again in tomorrow's race?"'"
It ultimately creates significant stress, as you begin to question if you're incapable of getting off to a strong start and worry about repeating mistakes the next day. You wonder if people will continue to remind you, "this is your eighth attempt…" Such thoughts definitely increase the pressure. I believe he felt a great deal of this pressure, particularly in the beginning. Yet, he managed to perform remarkably well once more.
The situation took an unexpected turn due to the errors he made during the race. It was somewhat perplexing to witness what happened next, as he collided with the wall on two separate occasions. Both incidents were quite severe, nearly resulting in him being unable to finish the race, and it was fortunate that he did not end up with a DNF (Did Not Finish).
On one occasion, he veered significantly off course at a tight turn, experiencing not just a minor braking mishap, but a major one. Another time, he collided with the same barrier that George Russell did last year, when Russell crashed in the final lap.
He veered off course once more while overtaking a slower car, in this case, the Williams, leading to another off-track excursion. This marked the third instance of such an occurrence. It's quite peculiar.
"I don't recall ever seeing myself, or Max Verstappen, or Lewis [Hamilton], while in a commanding lead, committing three significant errors. That seemed quite unusual. I understand that Singapore presents a huge challenge in terms of concentration and physical demand, it was extremely difficult. I'm not sure what caused it.
"According to Lando, he frequently commits minor mistakes consistently across the board. It's evident he exhibits this behavior, and he must address it if he aims to contend for the championship this season."
