MotoGP 2025: Riders Welcome Shift to Double-Header Format Over Triple-Headers in Record 22-Round Season
2025 MotoGP schedule: “Preferable to have two races back-to-back rather than three”
MotoGP to eliminate triple-header races, opting for seven consecutive weekends of racing starting in June 2025.
In an announcement made in Mandalika on Thursday, the 2025 MotoGP schedule is set to introduce some new features, including aiming for a record-breaking 22 races. However, it has been confirmed that there will not be any back-to-back-to-back triple-header events.
Nonetheless, there are set to be at least seven instances of sequential events, running from the Italian Grand Prix on June 22 to the season-ending race in Valencia on November 16.
Put differently, the concluding 14 matches.
"Looking at the schedule, I find it fascinating how the races are organized consecutively," Fabio di Giannantonio remarked. "In my opinion, there could be greater intervals between the events, which would be beneficial for us in terms of recovery and preparation."
VR46 colleague Marco Bezzecchi commented: "The schedule seems promising. Having numerous back-to-back races rather than three in succession is a positive change. It's definitely going to be a new experience. Naturally, we need to experience it ourselves before making any definitive remarks, but it appears quite appealing. Kicking off the season this early feels unusual, yet it's understandable given the packed lineup of races."
Monster Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo expressed his desire for a second set of eight victories.
"The 2021 world champion mentioned that it seems alright to them, stating a preference for Austin and Argentina to be scheduled consecutively. However, they acknowledged the benefit of having two consecutive races instead of three."
The establishment of the Japan-Australia-Malaysia trio of events was designed to minimize travel expenses for the majority of teams, eliminating the necessity for repeated flights to and from Europe between competitions.
The expansion of events outside of Europe has led to a situation where, this year, the calendar was set to include back-to-back triple-header races in distant locations (India-Indonesia-Motegi followed by Phillip Island-Buriram-Sepang). However, the Indian race was subsequently swapped out for an additional round in Misano, keeping the original date unchanged.
The tentative schedule for 2025, indicating the sequence of consecutive races, is displayed below:
