Mixed Fortunes for Aprilia MotoGP Duo at Emilia-Romagna GP: Qualifying Woes Undermine Race Potential
Mixed emotions for Aprilia's MotoGP riders as their qualifying performance affects the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
“We understand that it's crucial for us to begin at the front of the grid; otherwise, it's challenging to be competitive with our bike.”
Following a calamitous showing at the Aragon and San Marino Grands Prix, Aprilia found a glimmer of hope during the Emilia-Romagna round of the MotoGP World Championship.
Maverick Vinales secured a sixth-place finish, showing impressive speed during the middle of the race. However, his chances of ending up in the top five were hindered by a subpar qualifying session that left him starting from eighth position.
"The sensation was positive, to be truthful," Vinales shared with MotoGP.com following the second race in Misano. "We made significant progress compared to the San Marino Grand Prix."
"This is extremely encouraging. While it's evident that we maintain an impressive speed midway through the race with times around 1:31-low, we are aware that starting at the front is crucial. Without a good starting position, it becomes quite challenging for our bike to stay competitive."
“I'm confident that if I continue to work on it, success will come. We've made significant progress here in Misano, and we'll aim to maintain this pace in the upcoming Grands Prix.”
Aleix Espargaro had a more reserved outlook compared to his Aprilia teammate Vinales. However, he did find some hope in Aprilia’s performance at the Emilia-Romagna race, especially when compared to their showing at the San Marino Grand Prix held at the same Misano track two weeks earlier.
"I'm not satisfied, though we did make some progress compared to the San Marino Grand Prix," Espargaro stated.
"The speed during the initial segment of the race was fairly decent. Although we acknowledge that we're not quite on par with our competitors here, securing an eighth-place finish is still respectable."
"Additionally, the distance between us and a podium finish wasn't what we anticipated, but we managed to narrow it slightly compared to the San Marino Grand Prix."
“I’m focusing on staying optimistic and am eager for the upcoming Grand Prix.”
