Michael Andretti Shifts Gears: From Team Ownership to Advisory Role in an Emotional Farewell That Promises Continued Involvement
Michael Andretti speaks on reducing role in team ownership: "This is not a farewell"
"However, I'm not disappearing – I'll act as a consultant for the squad and offer my assistance in any capacity needed."
Michael Andretti has issued a heartfelt statement concerning his decision to reduce his involvement in the daily operations of Andretti Global.
Since 2002, the ex-Formula One racer has served as the leading representative for Andretti Global.
Under his leadership, Andretti Global has achieved a wealth of victories across multiple motorsport categories, especially in IndyCar.
Last week, Andretti revealed that he would continue his association with the organization by serving in a consultancy and representative capacity, instead of participating in the team's day-to-day operations.
In the last two years, Andretti has made efforts to join Formula 1, but faced opposition from the current 10 teams, resulting in the rejection of his bid.
In a public statement, Andretti expressed, "Racing is in my blood. Since childhood, I've known nothing but the thrill of speed. Carrying the legacy of a father in racing – a legacy I embrace with pride – set a lofty standard, and once I hit the accelerator, there was no turning back. I pursued victory relentlessly.
I was motivated by my deep affection and enthusiasm for the sport when I got behind the wheel, yet my victories were fueled by the dread of defeat. The aspirations my father harbored from his youth were passed down to me, shaping my fate. Together, we established both a legacy and a family enterprise.
As my time behind the wheel began to decrease, I focused on developing an environment that would motivate upcoming racers to surpass my speeds. I am convinced that, through the collective efforts of numerous dedicated and skilled team members, we've achieved precisely that. Over the last 20 years, our group has experienced the greatest successes and faced significant challenges.
"Our expansion on an international scale, I think, remains unparalleled in motorsport, and we've witnessed some of the finest racers proudly represent the Andretti name."
Some of my most cherished moments have been leading this organization, and I take great pride in our accomplishments. However, years of relentless dedication have not been without their costs, and after considerable contemplation in recent months, I've decided it's time to scale back.
"I've been involved in daily operations long before I hung up my racing helmet, and now it's time to hand over responsibilities to my colleague and friend, Dan Towriss."
He continued, "In making this choice, considering my own well-being, my family's, and the team's, I understand it might come as a surprise to a lot of people, particularly to you, our supporters, who I regard as part of my larger family.
"For a lot of you, you've seen me mature, or we've matured together, and regardless of the decisions we've made as a group, you've remained loyal to us through it all. I fully recognize that the Andretti fanbase spans generations and is truly unparalleled in its dedication."
"I feel privileged to be viewed as a beloved fan, an inspiration, and a companion. I express my gratitude for your enduring support and, in certain instances, your candid feedback.
"However, I'm not disappearing – I'll be taking on a role as a consultant for the squad and will be on hand to offer assistance whenever it's needed. Even though you might not spot me as frequently at the racetrack, be assured that my enthusiasm for the sport and my backing for our team, along with its members, will stay strong and constant.
"I'm optimistic that you, the dedicated followers of Andretti, will continue to back our team with the same fervor and devotion that you've kindly extended to me and my family throughout the years.
"I'm thrilled at the chance to devote more time to my wonderful family, particularly my twins who are 10, welcome my new role as Nonno, and venture into new personal endeavors and business opportunities. Thus, this isn't a farewell. It's simply the start of a new chapter."
