The Legal Affairs Committee has approved the continuation of the confirmation hearings for all 26 individuals nominated for the Commissioner roles.
Members of the European Parliament's Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) have completed their review of potential conflicts of interest concerning the new Commissioners-designate and their assigned responsibilities. The next step involves moving forward to the confirmation hearings, where each Commissioner-designate will present before their designated committees following the schedule established by the Parliament.
The interest declarations from the designated commissioners will be made accessible to the public prior to the commencement of the confirmation hearings.
Statement
After the review, Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee (Renew, BG), stated: "The JURI Committee conducted a thorough and unbiased review of the interest declarations submitted by the Commissioners-designate, examining potential conflicts related to their proposed responsibilities. If we found the provided information lacking, we sought additional details to ensure a comprehensive evaluation and to form our judgments. While there may be valid critiques of the legal framework from a procedural standpoint, we will have the chance to examine it and propose changes if necessary. Today, I want to thank all JURI Members for their active participation in the process and for protecting the interests of not just the Committee and Parliament, but of European citizens as well, through their meticulous examination of all available data and information. I am pleased that JURI, alongside other parliamentary committees, can now concentrate on the confirmation hearings of the Commissioners-designate."
Context
As per the regulations set by Parliament, the task of the Legal Affairs Committee is to evaluate any possible or real conflicts of interest for each person nominated for the role of commissioner. This evaluation process is confidential and must be completed before the nominee can participate in a hearing at the European Parliament. The Legal Affairs Committee is required to provide written confirmation that no conflict of interest exists, allowing the nominee to proceed to the hearing with the appropriate committee.
