MEPs Greenlight Confirmation Hearings: JURI Clears Commissioners-Designate of Conflict of Interest Concerns
Members of the European Parliament finalize review of potential conflicts of interest for nominated Commissioners
Distribute this information:
The Legal Affairs Committee has approved the commencement of confirmation hearings for all 26 nominated Commissioners.
Members of the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) have finished reviewing potential conflicts of interest concerning the new Commissioners-designate and their assigned roles. The next phase involves confirmation hearings, during which each Commissioner-designate will appear before their relevant committees, following the schedule set by Parliament.
The interest disclosures provided by the nominated Commissioners will be made accessible to the public ahead of the confirmation hearings.
The
After the review, Ilhan Kyuchyuk, who leads the Legal Affairs Committee (Renew, BG), stated: "The JURI Committee conducted a thorough and unbiased evaluation of the interest declarations submitted by the Commissioners-designate, checking for any possible conflicts related to their assigned roles. If we found the information lacking, we asked for more details to fully understand all aspects and finalize our judgments. Procedurally, there could be valid criticism of the legal guidelines, which we will have the chance to review and possibly propose changes. However, today I want to thank all JURI members for actively participating in the process and protecting the interests of not just the Committee and Parliament, but also the European public, through their meticulous examination of all available data and information. I am pleased that JURI, along with the other parliamentary committees, can now concentrate on the confirmation hearings for the Commissioners-designate."
Context
Under the Parliament's procedural guidelines, it falls to the Legal Affairs Committee to evaluate whether each nominee for commissioner has any real or potential conflicts of interest. This evaluation process is private and must be completed before the nominee can participate in a hearing at the European Parliament. The Legal Affairs Committee is required to provide written confirmation that no conflicts of interest exist before the nominee can proceed to the hearing stage with the appropriate committee.
