McLaren’s Controversial Rear-Wing: Debunking the ‘Secret Sauce’ Myth in F1 Dominance
McLaren asserts that their contentious Formula 1 "flexible" rear wing is not the "key ingredient" to their success. "It's completely normal for people to be closely observing our car right now and making assumptions, many of which are wrong."
McLaren's CEO, Zak Brown, has asserted that the team's debated flexible rear-wing is not the key factor contributing to their achievements in the 2024 F1 season.
Following Oscar Piastri's impressive win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, McLaren's rear wing garnered significant attention.
Thanks to his remarkable speed on the straights, he managed to pass Charles Leclerc and then successfully held off the Ferrari driver for more than twelve laps.
Videos shared on social media caught the eye of several teams and the FIA.
During the Singapore weekend, it was revealed that McLaren, after having talks with the FIA, agreed to implement a "minor adjustment."
The specific rear wing is designed for tracks with low downforce requirements, such as Las Vegas. Notably, Lando Norris excelled at the Marina Bay Street Circuit previously, even without utilizing this rear wing.
In an interview with The Times, Brown evaluated the controversy involving the rear wing.
"Whenever someone is leading, people are constantly watching the car to figure out their strategy," he mentioned.
"It's completely normal for people to notice our car right now and form opinions, many of which are wrong. We have successfully completed all the tests."
"We suggested making a slight change, mainly because we believe it won't have a significant impact and there's a lot of commotion surrounding it. To show that there's nothing special about it, we decided to say, 'Okay, we'll alter it a bit.'"
Brown fully grasps the reasons behind McLaren's competitors' complaints, despite their complaints being unfounded.
Brown stated that the competitors are simply fulfilling their duties by causing a commotion.
"It's flattering that others are examining our vehicle and competing with us. Our car features impressive innovation."
As they approach the United States Grand Prix, McLaren holds a strong lead in the F1 constructors’ championship standings.
They are likely to secure their initial team championship since 1998.
