McLaren incorporates the son of a former Ferrari driver into their Formula 1 training scheme
McLaren has expanded their Formula 1 development roster by including a new driver.
McLaren has officially confirmed that Brando Badoer will join their Formula 1 driver development program after a year-long assessment period.
Brando is the offspring of ex-Ferrari Formula 1 competitor Luca Badoer, who most recently took to the track for the Scuderia in 2009, filling in for Felipe Massa.
The 18-year-old from Italy is currently participating in the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine.
Badoer currently holds the fifth position in the overall driver rankings, boasting seven podium finishes.
In 2025, the Italian racer will ascend to the FIA Formula 3 championship, joining the Prema team.
Regarding the announcement, Badoer expressed, "I am thrilled to be a part of the McLaren Driver Development program. It's an incredible chance to be associated with a team that has a remarkable history in racing and a solid track record of nurturing talent.
"Participating in the 2025 FIA Formula 3 Championship as a member of Prema Racing will further my development, and I want to express my gratitude to everyone at McLaren for their backing."
"I'm eager to benefit from the team's mentorship and start competing in the team's signature colors."
Stephanie Carlin, the lead for McLaren's F1 business activities and their development initiative, expressed her pleasure in incorporating Brando into their Driver Development program.
"Over the last year, we have closely monitored his progress and have been notably impressed by his debut performances in the challenging Formula Regional championship. Therefore, it was a logical decision for us to utilize our option and integrate him into the program on a full-time basis."
"We are excited to watch him compete in the iconic papaya colors and support his growth as he transitions to participating in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Prema Racing."
