During the warm-up lap, an insect collided with Marquez's visor, resulting in its demise. As Marquez was busy with the pre-race routines required to prepare a modern MotoGP motorcycle for the starting line, he ran out of time to peel off the tear-off layer from his visor to improve his visibility.
Thus, he had no option except to take off the tear-off once he had halted on the grid.
The discarded piece of material floated down and landed directly beneath the back tire of Marquez's Ducati Desmosedici GP23.
The outcome was a hazy beginning that has been circulated widely on social media numerous times.
Marquez initially fell back to 13th place but managed to make a comeback and claim victory. He overtook Jorge Martin, who is leading in points, on the second-to-last lap, achieving his fourth top-class win at Phillip Island. This track is among the few on the MotoGP calendar where the skill of the rider plays a more crucial role than the bike in determining performance.
Crash.net journalist Lewis Duncan commented that it was classic Marc Marquez.
"For the first time, we've witnessed the return of the 'old' Marquez in action. While he did have a commanding win at Aragon, that victory seemed to be more situational."
At the beginning, when the rider removed the tear-off, a large mosquito hit his visor. He didn't have a moment to clear it away, and unfortunately, the wind pushed the tear-off beneath his back tire. Although we find it amusing now, it had the potential to cause a dangerous situation.
Francesco Bagnaia nearly collided with him, found himself in 13th position at the first turn, but managed to climb to 6th place after just a few more corners.
"What truly stood out was how Marquez handled the Desmosedici GP23. Despite the significant differences between this model and the GP24, he managed to ride it just like a factory bike."
"At present, all eyes are on the upcoming year with people wondering, 'What is he truly capable of achieving with a GP25?'"
"This weekend marks the first time we've truly observed him stepping up. This showcases his capabilities on a GP23, despite it being significantly restricted and having its share of inherent issues. It's well-known that it tends to push the front end considerably, and the engine braking behavior differs greatly from that of the GP24."
"What will he be capable of achieving next year? This question might cause some unease among everyone, especially Francesco Bagnaia, as they look toward the upcoming year."
According to Peter McLaren, the MotoGP Editor for Crash.net, this victory was another demonstration of Marquez's distinctive riding style. He remarked, "This was a typical 'Marquez' victory, wasn't it? Perhaps the main takeaway is that all of his wins this year have been quintessentially 'Marquez'."
"Unreliable asphalt, some rain in Misano, and now a track that truly tests a rider's skills, and he significantly stands out."
"Marc Marquez was the key factor, wasn’t he? It wasn’t the GP23 that clinched the victory on Sunday; it was Marc who made it happen."
"Achieving that goal confirms for him what he wanted to know at the beginning of the year: 'Am I still capable of this?'"
"Marc is showing exceptional performance on tracks where he's previously excelled. This is certainly a cause for concern for others looking ahead to next year."
"I believe that over the course of a season, he will aim to perform well at certain tracks, including a few that are approaching, where he hasn't historically excelled."
"We've listened to him discuss having strong traction, and during the Misano races, we observed that his performance slightly declines."
"He likely aims to position himself as the last crucial component for next year by getting closer to the leading competitors during challenging circumstances."
"Aside from that, it was a perfect performance, showcasing classic Marquez at Phillip Island."
