Lando Norris Reflects on ‘Victory’ Over Max Verstappen at Austrian GP Despite DNF: A Turning Point in the Championship Battle?
Lando Norris asserts that he "triumphed" in his encounter with Max Verstappen in Austria, even though he did not finish the race. Lando Norris shares his thoughts on his confrontation with Max Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix.
Lando Norris stated that he "emerged victorious" in his duel with Max Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix earlier this year, even though it concluded with him not finishing the race.
Norris and Verstappen clashed while competing for first place at the Red Bull Ring.
The collision between the two drivers led to Norris withdrawing from the race, and Verstappen managed to secure only a fifth-place finish. This turn of events allowed George Russell to achieve an unexpected win in the race.
Verstappen had been comfortably leading the race until the last series of pit stops.
A sluggish pit stop by Red Bull put him at risk of being overtaken by Norris, who had just switched to new tires.
Luckily for Verstappen, he managed to gain 10 points more than Norris, instead of falling seven points behind in the championship battle.
Initially, no one anticipated that Norris would be a contender for the championship. However, by the year's conclusion, the happenings in Austria might play a crucial role in determining the winner of the drivers' title.
During a conversation with The Athletic, Norris shared his thoughts on his fierce competition with Verstappen.
Norris admitted that the outcome was not what he had hoped for.
"I believe that on that Sunday, I was likely more aggressive in confronting him, even though I didn't end up victorious in the end."
Verstappen is known for being the most challenging competitor to face on the track.
He frequently displays a relentless approach to his defense, as demonstrated in his encounters with Lewis Hamilton in 2021.
Norris acknowledged that competing against Verstappen at the forefront of Formula 1 is "still relatively new" for him, recognizing that the Dutch driver holds an edge due to his extensive experience in the sport.
"According to Norris, Max is likely the toughest competitor to race against on the track."
"He is likely among the most knowledgeable when it comes to understanding various situations, largely because he has held this role for the past four or five years. In contrast, this is still relatively new territory for me."
As we approach the United States Grand Prix next weekend, Verstappen holds a 52-point lead over Norris with six races remaining.
