Lando Norris Claims Victory in Verstappen Duel at Austrian GP Despite DNF Outcome
Lando Norris asserts he triumphed over Max Verstappen in their Austria showdown, even though he did not finish the race.
Lando Norris shares his thoughts on his confrontation with Max Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix.
Lando Norris asserted that he emerged victorious in his showdown with Max Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix earlier in the season, even though it concluded with him not finishing the race.
Norris and Verstappen clashed while vying for the top position at the Red Bull Ring.
The collision caused Norris to withdraw from the competition, and Verstappen managed to come in fifth, paving the way for George Russell to secure an unexpected win in the race.
Verstappen was smoothly advancing until the last series of pit stops.
Nonetheless, a delayed pit stop by Red Bull exposed him to Norris, who had just equipped a new set of tires at that moment.
Luckily for Verstappen, he managed to gain a 10-point advantage over Norris, instead of facing a seven-point deficit in the championship race.
Initially, it was not anticipated that Norris would be competing for the championship, but by the year's end, the incidents in Austria might play a crucial role in determining the winner of the drivers' title.
During a conversation with The Athletic, Norris shared his thoughts on his rigorous competition with Verstappen.
"Norris admitted that the outcome wasn't what he had hoped for."
"Even now, I believe that on that Sunday, I essentially succeeded in bringing the challenge to him, despite not being the one who emerged victorious in the end."
Verstappen is commonly seen as the most challenging competitor to face on the circuit.
He frequently demonstrates a relentless approach in his defense, as was evident during his encounter with Lewis Hamilton in 2021.
Norris acknowledged that competing against Verstappen at the forefront of F1 is "relatively unfamiliar" to him, recognizing that the Dutch driver holds a benefit due to his more extensive experience in the sport.
"Norris mentioned, 'Max is likely the most difficult competitor to face on the circuit.'"
"He's likely among the most situationally conscious individuals, a trait that's been enhanced by his experience in this role over the past four or five years. To me, it still feels relatively fresh."
As we approach the United States Grand Prix next weekend, Verstappen leads Norris by 52 points with six races remaining.
