Marc Marquez details the situation with the visor tear-off during the Australian MotoGP

Marc Marquez has clarified the reason he had to take off the visor tear-off, which nearly caused a disastrous start and jeopardized his win at the MotoGP Australian Grand Prix.

The Gresini racer experienced significant wheelspin right at the start of the 27-lap race at Phillip Island, causing him to quickly fall back in the rankings.

Starting from the second position, Marquez found himself as far back as 13th place by the time he reached Turn 1 on his GP23. However, he swiftly battled his way back to secure a spot in sixth place.

In the end, Marquez confronted Jorge Martin, who had been leading the race for a long time, and triumphed over the Pramac team rider in an exciting showdown.

In parc ferme, Marquez mentioned that he typically avoids taking off a visor tear-off while on the grid, as he considers it hazardous.

As he was positioning himself on the grid, an enormous object suddenly hit his visor, prompting him to promptly remove the tear-off. Unfortunately, as he tossed it away, it became lodged beneath his back tire.

This was the cause of his significant wheelspin at the start, which almost prevented him from securing his third grand prix victory of the season.

Marquez expressed to TNT Sports: "There was a large bug! A really big one. It was on the protective film of the visor."

"I was unable to see, and I would have reached the initial turn with my vision still impaired."

Right after the race, Marquez shouted, "There's always something going on!"

"I always avoid removing the tear-off at the beginning because it's risky."

"However, when I engaged the bike's holeshot this time, something enormous appeared right before my eyes."

"I didn't get the opportunity to reflect on it; I just removed it."

"Unfortunately, it ended up beneath my wheel. I noticed it and made an attempt to get it out, but it couldn't be done."

"When I let go of the clutch, it began to rotate."

"I'm not sure about my position at the first turn, but I managed to pass a lot of other competitors."

"I initially believed that overtaking Martin was out of the question, but by the fifth or sixth lap, I felt more relaxed. I was conserving the tire to make a final push."

Marquez stated that the riders have an informal understanding to minimize the disposal of visor tear-offs on the grid, citing safety concerns.

A notable instance of issues caused by discarded tear-offs occurred at Misano in 2020. During this event, Jack Miller's Ducati inadvertently picked up a tear-off from Fabio Quartararo, resulting in the premature conclusion of the Australian rider's race.

Ultimately, I was to blame. Although it's not a formal rule, we riders have an understanding to avoid discarding tear-offs on the grid, both for our own sake and for others, he clarified.

"However, on this occasion, I found myself without any alternatives."

From a novice mistake to a triumph on a Ducati

Michael Laverty from TNT Sports suggested that an insect flew into Marquez's visor while he was on the starting grid, affecting his performance.

"Typically, when there's an issue like a fly, you would remove the tear-off as you leave the grid, positioning it behind the grid," Laverty explained.

He operated the mechanism that controlled the descent at the front of the equipment. He moved into position and aimed to get rid of the fly.

He removed the tear-off, but sadly, the wind swept it under his motorcycle.

"You're attempting to unleash 300 horsepower on a slick plastic surface…"

"He managed it with great skill."

Laverty mentioned, "He wasn't able to remove his tear-off as he approached the starting line."

"He accidentally let it fall beneath his bicycle, which was quite a beginner's mistake. This happened because he engaged the lower mechanism."

"I'm not sure how he succeeded in navigating his confrontation with Enea Bastianini during the first lap."

"He was unstoppable as he moved through the competition, displaying immense strength."

"The decisive move that secured the race victory came from quite a distance. He made a bold maneuver on the inside, causing Jorge to drift slightly off his line. Following that, he maintained a fast pace for three laps to increase his lead."

"He won with ease, marking a remarkable return, delivering his finest performance on a Ducati to date."

On the 25th lap out of 27, Marquez made a bold maneuver by diving inside Martin at Turn 4, causing the Pramac rider to veer slightly off his line.

His victory at the Australian Grand Prix is his first triumph at Phillip Island since 2019, and it's the first time since 2021 that he has achieved three grand prix wins in one season.

After Enea Bastianini finished in a distant fifth place, Marquez has extended his lead to 14 points ahead of the factory Ducati rider, who is currently third in the rankings.
