Horner’s Call to Perez: Red Bull Needs Dual Force to Tackle F1 Championship Battle
Christian Horner emphasizes to Sergio Perez the importance of both drivers performing at their peak: "It's crucial that both our drivers are fully delivering."
Red Bull's team principal, Christian Horner, has called on Sergio Perez to improve his performance after a lackluster showing at the Singapore Grand Prix, stating that “we need two drivers at their best”.
Perez ended up in 10th place in Sunday's race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, concluding a challenging weekend for the Mexican driver.
The driver from Red Bull didn't qualify for Q3 and was caught behind Franco Colapinto for the majority of the race's initial stages.
In the latter half of the race, Perez faced the same challenge, unable to overtake Nico Hulkenberg.
Discussing Perez's performance with the press in Singapore, Horner said, "Checo spent almost 30 laps trying to get past Hulkenberg. Indeed, Checo got off to a strong start. He didn't qualify as well as he should have, and then he found it difficult to pass anyone.
"He found it somewhat challenging to gain the necessary grip in the crucial sections, particularly exiting Turn 3 and heading onto the back straight. However, that was the best he could achieve today."
Red Bull fell more behind McLaren in the team standings.
McLaren has now advanced to a 41-point lead with six races remaining.
It's not unexpected that Horner has higher expectations for Perez.
"He emphasized the necessity of having both drivers operating at their peak performance," he further stated.
"Checo experienced a positive weekend the previous week. However, this weekend was challenging for him. It's essential for us to have consecutive weekends where we observe McLaren placing both drivers on the podium. It's the accumulation of significant points that truly impacts the outcome."
"Essentially, our goal is to ensure that Checo is guided as far and accurately as possible in determining the correct path."
Max Verstappen had a more successful weekend, securing second place, just behind the race's commanding victor, Lando Norris.
