Fire Hazard Alert: Nissan Recalls Leaf EVs Over Battery Overheating Risks

Nissan has issued a recall for some of its Leaf electric cars following concerns that the batteries may overheat and ignite during rapid charging, according to information released by the NHTSA. Leaf owners are being instructed to avoid using the rapid charging feature until the necessary recall repairs are made.

The NHTSA has announced a recall affecting 23,887 Leaf hatchbacks from the 2019 and 2020 model years. However, it's estimated that only about 1% of these cars have the identified problem. The concern arises from an accumulation of lithium in the battery cells, which can lead to a rise in electrical resistance and, consequently, heat.

2019 Model of

The group of vehicles being recalled consists of various models equipped with either the regular 40-kwh battery or the extended 60-kwh battery. Nissan mentioned in the paperwork provided to the NHTSA that in vehicles with this flaw, drivers might detect signs such as smoke, loud sounds, disrupted charging sessions, or odors that suggest components are overheating. However, the car manufacturer did not disclose if there have been any confirmed incidents of fires caused by this problem.

Nissan is currently developing a software patch to resolve this issue. Dealers will implement this update at no cost as soon as it becomes available, which is expected to be at some point in November.

2019 Model of

The vehicle manufacturer intends to start sending out letters to car owners detailing the situation towards the end of this month. Nissan's Leaf model has seen minimal updates in recent times, resulting in it being the sole electric vehicle to still offer CHAdeMO rapid charging. Additionally, the Leaf has emerged as one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market, occasionally priced even lower than Nissan's own Versa, a fuel-efficient car. With the model already discontinued in the United Kingdom and Europe, there's speculation that the Leaf might be succeeded by a new model with more of a crossover design in the near future.
