EU Greenlights Over €1 Billion in Aid to Bolster Recovery from Devastating Floods in Five Countries
Five nations will benefit from more than €1 billion in aid from the EU to address natural disaster impacts
Spread the word:
On Tuesday, Members of the European Parliament gave the green light to allocate over €1 billion from the EU Solidarity Fund to assist recovery operations in five EU countries that experienced devastating floods in 2023.
The €1,028,541,689 financial assistance from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) is set to be allocated in the following manner:
The financial aid from the EUSF will partially fund the expenses related to emergency and recovery efforts. This includes repairing infrastructure that has been damaged, protecting cultural sites, and carrying out clean-up activities.
Members of the European Parliament extend their heartfelt support to the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by the devastating floods in Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece, and France. They also express solidarity with the national, regional, and local authorities engaged in the emergency response operations. Highlighting the rise in severe and catastrophic natural events across Europe, they suggest that the funding for the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) or a similar mechanism needs to be increased, anticipating the European Commission's forthcoming proposal on the new Multiannual Financial Framework.
The assistance package received approval with 632 votes supporting it, 7 opposing it, and 3 members choosing not to vote.
Additional details are available in the Commission's proposal and the European Parliament report prepared by rapporteur Georgios Aftias, representing the EPP from Greece. You can view the rapporteur's speech in the plenary session by clicking on this link.
