EP Leaders Set Schedule for Crucial Hearings of Commissioners-Designate: Key Steps Toward November Plenary Vote
EU leaders have established a schedule for the hearings of the proposed Commissioners.
Distribute this information:
The Presidents' Conference has finalized the specific timetable for the hearings of the Commissioners-designate.
The hearings are scheduled to occur between the 4th and 12th of November. Following discussions with the heads of various committees, the President of the European Parliament, along with the leaders of the political groups, finalized the comprehensive timetable outlining which Commissioner-designate will be questioned by which committees and at what specific times.
Leaders within the European Parliament have approved the set of written inquiries developed by various committees, which the designated Commissioners are required to answer by October 22, 2024.
After each hearing, a meeting is scheduled where the Committee Chairs and group coordinators involved will assess how well the Commissioner-designate performed during the session.
Once the evaluation process is finalized, the Committee Chairs' Conference will review the results of all hearings and send their recommendations to the Presidents' Conference. This group will then discuss and determine if the hearings should be concluded during their meeting scheduled for November 21. Additionally, they will decide on adding the vote for the entire College to the plenary session's agenda.
Full assembly decision
The entire Commission must be chosen through a straightforward majority of the votes cast during a full assembly, conducted via roll call. This vote is set to occur in the session held from November 25 to 28 in Strasbourg.
Context
According to Annex VII of the European Parliament's Rules of Procedure, the Parliament is responsible for approving the European Commission and overseeing the promises made during the hearing process.
The revised Rules of Procedures, effective from July 2024, were updated on April 10, 2024. This update is a component of a broader effort to reform the internal operational practices of Parliament, which received approval from the Conference of Presidents in December 2023.
