Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta Backs Simon Crafar to Bring Consistency to MotoGP Stewarding Amidst Controversial Decisions
The CEO of Dorna supports Simon Crafar in his efforts to bring "consistency" to the stewarding process. Carmelo Ezpeleta shares his opinions regarding the alterations made to the stewards panel.
According to the CEO of Dorna, Simon Crafar is the person who can resolve the issues surrounding MotoGP officiating.
Former motorcycle racer Simon Crafar, who presently works as a broadcaster for the official MotoGP coverage, is set to take on the role of chairman for the stewards panel starting next year.
He is set to take over Freddie Spencer's position.
This season, the choices made by stewards have faced intense examination.
Dorna's Chief Executive Officer, Carmelo Ezpeleta, acknowledged that there is uncertainty regarding what the stewards consider as offenses, and this issue is similar to challenges faced in other sports.
Ezpeleta expressed to AS, "Naturally, I find football puzzling as well."
The statement acknowledges the challenge of avoiding errors, but emphasizes the need for consistent decision-making from the FIM and IRTA. At the end of the year, when discussions take place, the speaker intends to request this consistency from the FIM, which is responsible for providing the stewarding service.
Ezpeleta expressed confidence in Crafar's ability to maintain steady performance.
"I'm optimistic about it. The decision is up to IRTA, and I consider him a decent person. However, I have a strong fondness for Spencer as well," he mentioned.
Spencer was among the top competitors in the history of this championship, and he needs to realize something important, highlighting how challenging the role of a [steward] can be.
The stewards were involved in multiple controversies, one of which was the collision between Enea Bastianini and Jorge Martin during the Emilia Romagna MotoGP.
Official records indicate that Bastianini's overtaking maneuver was considered so unremarkable that it did not warrant an investigation.
However, Crafar later disclosed that the stewards conducted an investigation but decided against penalizing Bastianini.
Marc Marquez was one of the individuals who argued that Bastianini deserved a penalty.
In another event, a crash involving multiple riders at Mandalika, attributed to Jack Miller and classified as a racing incident, prompted Aleix Espargaro to express concerns about the uniformity of the stewards' judgments.
