Defying US Sanctions: China’s Origin Quantum Amplifies Quantum Computer Production with Self-Crafted Chips
In the face of technological warfare, China enhances their quantum computing capacity using domestically-produced chips despite US restrictions. Origin Quantum, a research company that landed on the US trade embargo list this year, is escalating its production of superconducting quantum computers.
A Chinese firm, which is under US sanctions, is improving its production process for superconducting quantum computers – a first in China – following initial success with a chip it developed in-house. According to state media, this could boost the country's capacity to produce such advanced equipment on its own.
Origin Quantum, a research company located in Hefei, the capital of Anhui province in the east, has successfully maintained a 72-qubit quantum computing chip in a "steady operation" on its Origin Wukong superconducting quantum computer for a period of nine months. This information was revealed by a company executive in a report by People's Daily on Tuesday.
The company's chip lab is currently expanding its chip manufacturing capacity, intending to produce an advanced version of quantum chips. These new chips are expected to have enhanced performance, increased qubits, and improved stability, according to the report.
The business is also growing its superconducting quantum computer production line to eventually be able to concurrently assemble a minimum of eight units, an increase from the current maximum of five, as per the report.
Origin Quantum is expanding its activities in response to China's national quest for technological independence. This endeavor has gained urgency as the US intensifies its attempts to hinder China's advancement by limiting its access to progressive American technologies through trade restrictions.
