David Alonso Credits Marc Marquez’s Championship Advice Ahead of Moto3 Title Showdown
David Alonso reveals vital guidance from Marc Marquez
"Marc Marquez? 'What he told me was…'"
David Alonso has shared an important piece of guidance he received from MotoGP legend Marc Marquez while preparing for his initial championship opportunity in the 2024 Moto3 competition.
This weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi, the 18-year-old rider seizes his initial opportunity to claim the 2024 Moto3 world championship, entering the race with a 97-point lead in the standings.
Having secured victories in both the Red Bull Rookies Cup and the European Talent Cup, Alonso is aiming to exit Motegi with a lead of 100 points to clinch the Moto3 title in only his second year of competing in grand prix motorcycle racing.
Securing a victory in Japan would clinch the championship for Alonso, simultaneously aligning him with Joan Mir's win count from his 2017 Moto3 championship season. Surpassing this would see him equal Valentino Rossi's historic record of 11 wins in a single season within the lightweight class.
This year, Alonso has been somewhat mentored by eight-time world champion Marc Marquez, who has been providing guidance to the young rider from Aspar.
Inquired about his approaching victory records at Motegi on Thursday, Alonso remarked, “The figures are indeed impressive, but I make an effort to not dwell on them too much while I'm riding.
"Concentrate on what I'm saying because it means a lot to me. Take, for instance, a memory from my childhood… there's a video where they inquire, ‘what's your dream’."
"Usually, people suggest heading straight to MotoGP. But I chose differently, expressing a desire to secure victories across different classes instead of rushing into MotoGP. To me, it's crucial to complete each phase and savor the challenge of competing for a world championship in any class."
"It offers a truly pleasant experience, providing ample learning opportunities in this context."
"Furthermore, Marquez imparted to me that securing a championship holds more value than making it to a MotoGP for any cause."
Alonso has received guidance from several elite MotoGP racers this year and mentions that he consistently seeks conversation with them during races because they are in the top tier "for a reason."
"It's beneficial because we're all gathered here, so whenever I'm around these guys, I make it a point to pay close attention and absorb as much as I can, since they're in MotoGP for a reason," he further stated.
"I often seek guidance because they have experience in what I'm currently undertaking, making it wise to heed their suggestions."
Within the Aspar team, Alonso possesses valuable experience to rely on this weekend as he seeks to secure the championship.
Nico Terol, the present sports director, clinched the 125cc global title in 2011 competing for Aspar, and the team's proprietor, Jorge Martinez, has secured numerous championships both as a competitor and as a team leader.
"This is uncharted territory for me," he commented regarding his championship decisive moment.
"Thus, I'm aiming to give attention to everyone in my team."
"Nico, for instance, who accomplished it back in 2011. Jorge will be joining us as well. They've advised me to aim for a regular weekend."
