A lawmaker who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder four years earlier has expressed his desire to publicize his condition to inspire others to seek help.
Gareth Davies serves as a Conservative representative in the Senedd for the Vale of Clwyd, a position he has held since 2021 in Cardiff Bay.
He received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder in early 2020, just before the onset of the COVID-19 lockdowns.
The individual, aged 36, confided to Sky News that at first, he was reluctant to acknowledge the possibility of an issue.
"As time progressed, the problems continued to escalate and became increasingly severe," he stated.
This led me to a point where I thought about ending my own life.
Clearly, my hope is that others don't reach that stage.
"My goal is to increase awareness and encourage those who may be quietly struggling to seek the support they require from a medical professional, family doctor, or even to confide in a family member or friend who can provide assistance."
Mr. Davies has taken on the role of ambassador for the mental health organization Bipolar UK.
"He expressed satisfaction about having the internal drive to seek assistance."
"Drawing on my own experiences, I aim to assist others because I understand firsthand what it's like."
"When you're in such a dire situation, it feels like there are no alternatives. If we can prevent people from reaching this point by enhancing support systems and reducing suicide rates, I believe that openly talking about these issues can increase awareness and assist individuals nationwide."
It is estimated that nearly 2% of the adult population in Wales, approximately 50,000 individuals, suffer from bipolar disorder.
According to Bipolar UK, it takes an average of 11.9 years to diagnose bipolar disorder in Wales after initially talking about symptoms with a healthcare professional, while in England the average is 9.4 years.
