China to Lift Australian Lobster Ban, Reviving Key Trade Ties and Boosting Industry Relief

China is expected to remove its prohibition on Australian lobster imports by year's end, a decision that follows discussions between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. This move is anticipated to bring considerable relief to the industry.

Australian companies have expressed their approval following the announcement that China will lift its trade barriers on Australian live lobsters. This decision comes after more than three years and was finalized during a discussion between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last Thursday.

Before 2020, China was a crucial market for Australian lobster exporters, purchasing 95 percent of Australia's A$750 million (US$504 million) lobster exports in 2019.

Australian seafood faced an informal ban by Chinese officials following the Morrison government's call, alongside other global leaders, for a probe into the origins of the coronavirus.

According to the Australia China Business Council, removing the restrictions is anticipated to "reestablish a vital trade channel, offering essential relief to manufacturers and reinstating trust in Australia's wider trade relations with China."
