California Police Department Pioneers Tesla Cybertruck for DARE and Community Outreach

The Tesla Cybertruck has been enlisted for law enforcement services in California, although we're not at the point of needing a RoboCop just yet.

In a recent tweet, the Irvine Police Department, now referred to as X, revealed that they were expecting the arrival of a Cybertruck. Fast forward to a few months, and the Cybertruck has been transformed into a service vehicle for law enforcement, as seen in a video posted by the department on Facebook this past Tuesday.

The law enforcement team in Irvine mentioned that the Cybertruck will be incorporated into their initiatives aimed at resisting drug abuse and engaging with the community. Although the vehicle won't be assigned to regular patrol or high-speed chases, it will be available to aid in urgent situations and provide support to local residents as required, as stated by the agency.

UP.FIT, a subdivision of the tuning company Unplugged Performance, has upgraded the Tesla and showcased a police version of the Cybertruck on their Facebook page.

UP.FIT revealed their new Cybertruck model designed for police use in June, mentioning that various law enforcement departments and organizations had already shown enthusiasm for the vehicle, with plans to begin distributing it later in the year.

UP.FIT announced the launch of their new truck, highlighting that buyers have the option to outfit it with standard law enforcement gear. This includes communication devices such as radios, barriers for detaining suspects, compartments for storing firearms and gear, and compartments for police dogs. Additionally, the firm provides enhanced suspension and braking systems, along with a package designed for off-road use.

UP.FIT provides a service that adapts existing vehicles to electric, but in 2022, Ford unveiled a police truck model powered by electricity, which is derived from its F-150 Lightning series. This model is available via Ford's in-house Special Service Vehicle (SSV) customization service. The previous year, Ford, a dominant player in the police vehicle sector, displayed a Mustang Mach-E outfitted for police use and later revealed that the New York Police Department was considering adding the Mach-E to their fleet.

However, apart from minor trials, law enforcement agencies have generally steered clear of electric vehicles because there weren't many appropriate choices available, and expenses were a significant concern, as indicated in a report from 2022. This shifted in July when South Pasadena made a groundbreaking move by transitioning its entire police vehicle lineup to electric Tesla Model 3s and Ys.

Update – The narrative has been altered to indicate that the police truck has now been received by the Irvine Police Department.
