Calendar Clashes Persist: MotoGP and F1 Navigate Scheduling Overlaps Under Liberty Media Ownership
MotoGP's schedule will continue to overlap with Formula 1 events despite being under Liberty's management. Both Formula 1 and MotoGP are considering each other's calendars during their planning processes.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, the CEO of Dorna Sports, anticipates that MotoGP and Formula 1 will collaborate more closely in scheduling their events now that Liberty Media is in charge. However, some overlaps will still occur.
At the beginning of this year, Liberty, the owner of Formula 1, revealed that it had acquired 86% of Dorna and MotoGP. This transaction, valued at $4.2 billion, is expected to be finalized by the close of 2024.
Although Liberty has its own vision for expanding MotoGP, it has consistently assured that it does not intend to alter the series' unique character, easing concerns among fans about it turning into something similar to Formula 1.
Both racing series have announced their schedules for 2025, with Formula 1 planning to hold 24 races next year and MotoGP tentatively scheduling 22 races.
Although Formula 1 announced its 2025 calendar back in April, and MotoGP only unveiled its schedule last month, there are nine weekends where both series will coincide.
In a discussion with the Spanish outlet AS, Ezpeleta acknowledges that preventing schedule overlaps is challenging due to the numerous races both series currently hold. However, he suggests that this situation is unlikely to change soon under Liberty's management.
He mentioned that it's quite challenging to avoid scheduling conflicts because the F1 calendar features 24 races, while MotoGP has 22, all occurring from March to November.
"There has always been strong collaboration, which is expected to increase now that Liberty Media is acquiring Dorna. However, scheduling conflicts will remain unavoidable."
Formula 1 and MotoGP are coordinating their schedules to avoid conflicts.
"Before scheduling our events, we check their calendar, and now they do the same with ours. This mutual consideration didn't happen in the past."
MotoGP is scheduled to make a comeback in Hungary in 2025 at the newly constructed Balaton Park circuit, which is slated for enhancements to meet the necessary requirements.
The series is scheduled to make a comeback in Argentina after this year's race was called off because austerity measures redirected the event's funding.
