Audi’s Unwavering F1 Vision: Commitment Remains Strong Amidst Renault’s Departure
Audi has restated its dedication to Formula 1 for the foreseeable future following Renault's decision to discontinue their engine project. Audi remains committed to F1 in the long run.
Audi has reiterated their dedication to Formula 1 for the foreseeable future, even as Renault has decided to discontinue their engine program.
Renault has decided to discontinue their power unit program for 2026 and will instead become a customer team when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Despite Renault's departure from F1, the sport is gaining Red Bull-Ford, Audi, and seeing Honda make a comeback.
There is widespread speculation that Audi is trailing Mercedes and Ferrari in the development of their Formula 1 power unit for the 2026 season.
Nonetheless, Audi's CEO, Gernot Dollner, has assured that Renault's choice to discontinue their engine project will not affect the German company's strategies.
When questioned regarding Renault, he responded, "No, that topic wasn't included in the conversation."
"Audi is dedicated to staying involved in Formula 1 for the foreseeable future,” Dollner stated. “Earlier this year, the boards overseeing AG and Audi made the choice to fully acquire the shares of Sauber."
"Starting on January 1, 2025, we will take full control of Sauber."
"In 2025, that event is set to take place. As the current chairman of Sauber and a member of the board of directors at Sauber Motorsport, I plan to become more deeply engaged in our Formula 1 initiative."
Sauber has had a disappointing season in 2024, having been unable to earn any points in the 18 races held up to now.
Dollner believes that with Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley joining the team, the project is in good hands and poised for success.
"We're extremely pleased to have secured an excellent leadership team for our Formula 1 initiative, which includes Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley."
Featuring a robust dual leadership structure, one leader manages corporate operations while the other oversees a car-related project.
"We think we've discovered an ideal arrangement for our future activities, with one person managing our racetrack operations and acting as our spokesperson."
