Yuki Tsunoda: Overlooked Talent or Future Red Bull Racing Star?
Yuki Tsunoda thinks he has earned an opportunity to showcase his skills with the Red Bull main Formula 1 team.
Yuki Tsunoda of RB is confident that he merits an opportunity to secure a Formula 1 seat with Red Bull going forward.
Even though Tsunoda has consistently delivered strong performances for RB, it appears he has been consistently overlooked by the senior Red Bull team.
Previously dismissed Daniel Ricciardo was originally recruited by Red Bull as an alternative for the struggling Sergio Perez, whereas Ricciardo's successor, Liam Lawson, seems to have now surpassed Tsunoda as a prime candidate for a forthcoming Red Bull position.
When questioned about whether he believes he should already be competing for Red Bull, Tsunoda, who has a contract to race for Red Bull in 2025, responded to F1.com by stating, "I'm not sure about the past years, but definitely this year, yes."
The young racer from Japan, at 24 years of age, has earned 22 points out of the 34 points total for RB this season, as the team based in Faenza aims to maintain their sixth position in the constructors' championship.
Tsunoda maintains that ongoing rumors about a potential seat at Red Bull have absolutely no effect on his strategy for the upcoming six races.
He mentioned, "I've essentially become accustomed to those aspects," expressing his familiarity. "These topics have been circulating all year, thus discussing them further seems unnecessary. My priority is to concentrate on my personal growth and do whatever is required for that."
"In this setting, it's all about excelling and my attention is solely on enhancing my skills. Currently, my primary goal is to earn points for the team and ensure a prosperous season."
"For me personally, securing the 6th place in the constructors' championship is a huge motivation. Our team has never historically reached this milestone, so accomplishing it would be an impressive achievement."
When questioned about the possibility of joining Red Bull in 2025, Tsunoda responded, "I'm not sure. I would think so, but obviously, it will hinge on how well I perform."
"As we've observed within our team, it constantly revolves around performance, and if I excel, hopefully, they'll take notice. It's unpredictable, I can't foresee it, nor can I influence those aspects in any way."
Regarding welcoming Lawson as a new member of the team starting with this weekend's United States Grand Prix, Tsunoda commented, "Having teammates come and go isn't new to me, so this change doesn't introduce a novel situation or add any additional pressure. Pressure is a constant, so I'll continue with my usual approach.
"I find pleasure in driving and I'm really into the competition aspect. Staying concentrated on improving our car alongside the engineers is something I'm dedicated to. Collaborating as a united team appeals to me, and I'm truly savoring this experience."
